HEAD coach Luke Williams says Swindon Town cannot afford to fail to capitalise on their new-found momentum again.

A memorable victory has often given the impression that Town have turned the corner in what has been a forgettable season so far but they still find themselves 18th in the League One table, just four points above the relegation zone.

Williams hopes last weekend’s 2-1 comeback win at Bolton Wanderers is not the latest false dawn and instead wants it to kick-start a more permanent renaissance, beginning at home to against Peterborough United today.

“It has been the reason we are where we are; because we have not been able to back-up outstanding performances with another,” said Williams.

“We have had those throughout the season. We have played extremely well – it’s just not been consistent enough. Instead of being a 10 out of 10 one week and a seven the next, we go from 10 to two. We need to scrap that.

“It’s been the story all through. Too many times we’ve had a great performance backed up with a nothing performance or even worse, a limp, terrible one.”

The unlikely victory at Bolton has given the whole club a lift during a tough spell and Williams hopes those positive vibes have also been felt within their fanbase.

Williams knows his team often carry the weight of expectation on their shoulders, so is eager to provide more moments to savour.

“After that result, I think everyone is quite high, so we will hope for more away days like that,” said Williams.

“It was fantastic to have everybody feeling a lift. We are desperate to do that. That’s what we are here to do, to entertain.

“This is still a very working class town and the football really is the heartbeat of many people’s social life, and we are conscious of that.

“If we can make people’s weekends, like after the Bolton result, then we will feel very good.”

Town’s current home form does not reflect their lowly position as they are on a five-match unbeaten sequence at the County Ground in League One, which began with a 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic on November 12.

Williams knows it is vital Swindon maintain that to give them the best chance of survival this season.

“We definitely take a lot from that and if you can win the majority of your home games and try to pick up points on the road, then we will know we will finish in a good position,” added Williams.

“If we are more ambitious, then we need to start picking up three points away from home more often and certainly, the County Ground has got to be a fortress.

“We need to pick up points week in, week out and win games.”
