CONFIDENCE is not an issue among the Swindon Town squad, according to Conor Thomas as his team prepare for their toughest test yet.

This weekend, Swindon face a trip to Scunthorpe United, the scene of a 6-0 humiliation for Luke Williams’ side in the dying throes of last season, and what is awaiting them in North Lincolnshire tomorrow looks no easier.

Town have suffered defensively this term with injuries, with Thomas having to play a large proportion of his matches this term in a central defensive position.

It will be of concern to Town then that Scunthorpe have been in rampant form this term, having scored 32 goals already, with Josh Morris scoring for fun and netting 13 league goals already.

However, there will be no throwing in of the towel from Thomas and his teammates before a ball is even kicked.

“We’ve actually got a really tight group and they are all great lads,” he told the local media.

“We’re all disappointed and devastated in the changing room but nobody will be giving up, nobody will be chucking it in.

“We will be working all week towards Saturday and we’ll be taking it one game at a time. We’ll be doing everything we can to put things right."

Town’s defeat to Walsall last weekend was their first since altering their formation to accommodate for injuries.

Despite early signs that their new system may be the key to turning the season around, Town were stifled at the County Ground last Saturday and Thomas doesn’t believe it is down to the way the team set up last weekend but rather the application of the players, which they hope to correct tomorrow.

“We have played three at the back, we have had two good results playing 4-2-3-1 so it wasn’t the tactics.

“On the day, we just weren’t good enough. They came with a game plan and their game plan worked and we couldn’t counter that with implementing how we wanted to play.

“I played at centre back and when I was getting it (the ball), I was looking up and there wasn’t a lot on with the way they set up.

“When (a team) has a two-goal lead, they can afford to sit in like that and counter, so we have got to cut out the mistakes and not give them that chance.”

Swindon will be without Bradley Barry, who is suspended after a fifth yellow card of the season.
