JORDAN Smith says it would be a dream come true to be crowned the European Challenge Tour’s Race to Oman champion as he prepares to go for glory next week.

Bowood golfer Smith sits second in the current standings with two events to go following a dream debut season on the continental circuit’s second tier.

Smith teed off the penultimate event of the year at the Ras Al Khaimah Challenge in the United Arab Emirates today, carding a three-under-par opening round of 69, and will bring the curtain down on the campaign at the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final in Oman, which gets under way on November 2.

Derry Hill’s Smith claimed a tournament triumph at the Red Sea Egyptian Challenge back in April and is just under 20,000 points behind current Race leader Alexander Knappe, of Germany, and will be giving his all to overhaul him at the summit.

“I’m very happy with the way the year has gone,” said Smith, who missed a second cut in a row at last week’s Foshan Open.

“I haven’t played the best over the last two weeks but I am going into this week and next week in good spirits and I am just going to go out there are try to finish top of the order of merit – that’s the goal.

“This week, I am definitely look to win the event, get that under my belt and boost me back up to top position, hopefully. Then, just go into next week with the confidence I have had all year and just go out and enjoy it.

“The whole year has been awesome. I have managed to enjoy pretty much every week; travelling the world, seeing different countries with a really good bunch of guys.

“The highlight of the year is definitely winning in Egypt but hopefully I can better that by winning the order of merit overall.”

Smith has already secured his card for the 2017 European Tour season but the 23-year-old is not satisfied with just that and wants to make the step up next year with a champion’s pedigree.

“It would mean the world to me. I topped the order of merit on the EuroPro Tour last year and topping it on the Challenge Tour this year would just give me that confidence boost that I can compete and keep things going and progressing for next year on the European Tour,” said Smith.

“It’s good to have that sorted already but I still have to push on and finish top now. I need that motivation to go on and finish top.

“I am just focussed on this week, hopefully finishing up there or thereabouts, and then when Sunday evening comes and it’s over, I can think about next week.”
