LUKE Williams predicts that Swindon Town will maintain their poise and continue to say: ‘your move’ to opponents as they persist with their recently revamped approach.

When Walsall rock up at the County Ground this afternoon, Town look likely to re-employ a formation with a flat back four screened by deep-lying midfielders but their style against the Saddlers will be about a lot more than just positional posturing.

In the early throes of their impressive 3-0 victory over Rochdale last Tuesday, Swindon sat back and waited for their in-form counterparts to overexert themselves before springing the trap and capitalising in clinical style.

Some of Town’s previous opposition have garnered success by putting the squeeze on Williams’ men as they patiently stroke the ball around the pitch but the Swindon head coach thinks that his team are now a more complicated proposition to deal with.

“It is clear to see we don’t dominate the ball anywhere near as much but there is a new problem for the opponents because instead of practising all week only to try and stop Swindon and press Swindon, now you need to come and try and attack us,” Williams told the local media.

“You need to put some more players forward and leave us some space, which is an unusual circumstance for us but is a different problem for the opposition.

“We kept a clean sheet at Oldham, we conceded one goal at Shrewsbury, we kept a clean sheet against Oxford, we conceded one from an own goal at Bolton; I don’t think too much changed.

“But, at the moment, personnel is making it obvious and sensible for me to put (out) a back four.

“Recent results are making it obvious for me to try and put more midfield players to protect the back four and to make the lines of defence deeper.”

“At the moment, it has given us a draw (at AFC Wimbledon) and a victory, so we will probably continue for the time being.”
