DEVIZES Town manager Darran Walters was as shocked as anyone on Saturday as he watched his side demolish Ashton & Backwell United 8-2 in the First Division on the road.

Having drawn a blank against Roman Glass St George the week prior, even Walters had not anticipated the deluge that was about to unfold before him.

A brace from Robbie Mitchell added to a goal from Jack Hopper in the first half to put the visitors in a commanding position at the break, before the latter went on to secure three more, with Mitchell netting a hat-trick and Luke Jenks wrapping up the result.

The only blot on the notebook came before the break when Dan Sloan picked up a red card in an incident that also saw Ashton & Backwell’s Sam Skidmore receive his marching orders.

“I was delighted with that result,” said Nursteed Road chief Walters.

“I didn’t see that coming before the game but on the day, we played really well.

“We defended really well and the last couple of games we have been struggling to score goals and then it all seemed to click on Saturday and everything we hit seemed to find the back of the net.

“We always felt in control of the game, with us starting well.

“Josh Brigham made his debut at centre half and we looked a lot more composed and settled with him back there.

“We were desperate to get something out of the game, it had been two league defeats on the bounce and we didn’t want to make it three.

“It just keeps us in touch with everybody.

“The only disappointing thing on the day was that our captain got sent off again so he is looking at another four-match ban now.”

Meanwhile, Corsham Town held Bishops Lydeard to a 2-2 draw away from home courtesy of goals from Ben Pring and Lewis Russell for the Southbank side.

It was a bad day all round in the Les Phillip Cup as Calne Town, Malmesbury Victoria and Chippenham Park all crashed out.

Malmesbury lost 4-2 on penalties after a brace from Sam Parker had taken the game to extra time.

Calne were beaten 3-1 at Bremhill View to Premier Division side Gillingham Town and Chippenham Park were humbled 6-2 away to Bristol outfit Roman Glass St George.

Park were also beaten 3-1 at Wincanton Town on Tuesday evening.
