SWINDON Town skipper Nathan Thompson would like to see further reinforcements come through the door at the County Ground before the start of the season.

Wednesday night’s defeat at home to Swansea City highlighted the fragility of the Town squad when Raphael Branco was forced off minutes into the second half with a recurrence of a groin injury that sidelined him last term.

Luke Williams was forced to move to a flat back four with the arrival of Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill, but his heart would have been in his mouth later on when Thompson went down requiring treatment in the box.

Fortunately, Thompson had just rolled his ankle and was able to continue but the 25-year-old is keen to see depth added to a paper-thin squad.

“I think it is evident that we need some new faces in just to strengthen the team slightly and add some depth to it,” he told BBC Wiltshire.

“Johnny (Obika) gives us a different dimension in terms of being able to play a little bit more direct at times, especially when they come with a squeeze and press high up the pitch, it is important that we relieve that bit of pressure.

“We will leave that up to the manager and the chairman to find those new faces and I am sure when they come in, they will settle in quickly.”

Town suffered their third defeat of their pre-season campaign when they fell to Premier League side Swansea, with three second-half goals sealing their fate.

However, Thompson was not left down trodden by the result and thinks the team is moving in the right direction as they prepare to start their League One campaign at home to Coventry City next weekend.

“I think there are many positives to take from it,” he added.

“Until Rafa (Branco) had to come off and we had to change the shape, there were many pleasing aspects.

“It’s encouraging stuff.

“As the manager says, it is very rare that you are going to face an opposition like Swansea.

“They were in a position in their own corner and managed to pass it 60 yards down field for Barrow to finish it at top speed.

“It is top drawer and it is top quality stuff but it is enjoyable to play against as well.

“There are aspects there that we can learn from going forward into the Yeovil game and then Coventry.”
