Beautyman, 24, had been placed on the transfer list by new Posh boss Grant McCann, who left the player out of their pre-season training camp in Portugal after telling him he didn’t feature in his plans for the 2016-17 League One campaign.
Peterborough director of football Barry Fry had revealed that Swindon’s interest was concrete but that no fee had yet been agreed between the clubs, although Town chairman Lee Power played down his club's interest earlier this week.
Beautyman penned a two-year deal at Sixfields and Cobblers boss Rob Page said: "Harry is a very good addition for us.
"He is a lively character and a player who has a decent amount of experience in League One. He is also a good age, who will get better and better, and I think we are signing him at a good time.
"He is a box to box midfielder who creates things, makes things happen and can score a goal or two so he will add to our attacking options.
"He attracted a fair amount of interest over the summer and we are pleased we have been able to bring him to the club.”
Posh boss McCann said: "It is a good move for Harry because it is fairly local so he shouldn't have to move.
"I spoke to him at the back end of last season and explained that I didn't think I could give him the first team football that he wanted.''
Beautyman made 44 appearances for Posh and scored five goals.
