JAMIE Phillips is hoping to overcome a wrist injury as he prepares to compete in the BMX World Championships.

The 13-year-old, from Langley Burrell, qualified to represent Great Britain in Medellin, Columbia, in May having finished in the top eight of the national series last year.

The Sheldon School pupil has also achieved qualification for the European Championships in Verona this July.

However, Jamie will be looking to shake off the injury suffered last December when he fractured and dislocated the joint in a high speed crash in training.

The injury saw him miss three months of winter training but dad Gary believes he is on track to be back to his best come the Worlds.

“He had a good season last year, finishing in the top eight in the national series,” he said. “His preparations have been a little bit disrupted.

“It is his first serious injury. It is a sport that as you get older things get faster and the likelihood of picking up a serious injury, it is not just a sprained ankle or anything like that, is higher.

“He is still not 100 per cent at the moment but we are targeting towards the early part of May to be back in full tilt.

“We’re moving in the right direction and things are going really well in that respect.”

Jamie is aiming to improve on his eighth place finish nationally and his 36th position overall at the World Championships, as well as retain his South West Regional Series title, with the Olympic Games in Rio acting as a big inspiration.

“It was back in 2008 when he saw Sinead Rees in Beijing that got him into the sport in the first place,”

“He enjoys watching other riders and it is a great sport and going to the worlds, you can get up close and personal with those riders.

“Not only is the performance important on the day it is also to see the best riders competing at the top of their game.”
