TWO-GOAL hero Nicky Ajose believes Swindon Town’s lightning start was crucial to their dominant success over Chesterfield.

Striker Ajose continued his hot streak in front of goal at the Proact Stadium, providing the book-ends to Town’s 4-0 win with the opener in the third minute before completing the rout in the 80th.

The brace took Ajose’s tally to nine goals since his return to the County Ground in September and made it seven in his last eight games.

Louis Thompson put Town two goals to the good inside a quarter-of-an-hour on Saturday and Ajose admits the visitors were never likely to relinquish such a strong position from there.

“We got off to a good start, that was the major difference,” said Ajose, who converted full-back Brad Barry’s cross for his first goal and finished off a fine team move for his second.

“We managed to punish them early doors and it set us on the way to a good performance. It’s nice to get a win away from home.

“It was a good cross from Brad, he’s got quality. I made the run and managed to put it away.

“Brad’s come into the team and it’s his first season and he’s done really well. He’s really aggressive and has got bundles of energy. He’s come on leaps and bounds every week.

“I feel like we have got a good understanding but that’s probably along with a few other players too.

“Then it was nice to get another goal and make the scoreline a bit more flattering.

“Especially for the defensive lads and the goalie, it’s nice to come away with a clean sheet. That’s important for everyone’s confidence.”

The victory was Town’s first on the road since September 5 and drew a line under a string of miserable away days, capped by last weekend’s 5-1 drubbing at Fleetwood.

Ajose actually did not see too many differences between the two displays and believes they could have triumphed at Highbury had they been as sharp in front of goal as they were against the Spireites.

“It wasn’t a result we were expecting or performance. We didn’t compete and it was unacceptable, really,” added Ajose.

“I don’t see too many differences between the start of this game and that game, we just managed to put away a couple of chances.

“Goals change games, it’s an old cliché, but that is very true here. If we’d put away a couple of chances there it’s a different story.”
