LOUIS Thompson has admitted he has not been hitting the heights so far in his return to Town.

The Swindon academy graduate, who completed his move to Premier League Norwich at the end of last season, scored a dramatic winner on Tuesday night against Walsall to give Town a vital three points.

Thompson made the ninth appearance of his loan spell against the Saddlers and certainly the most impressive. His 25-yard strike capped a display reminiscent of his fine performances last season.

The Welsh Under 21 international holds himself to high standards and was quite open about the fact he has not been playing at the levels most Town fans know he can reach.

“I’ll run myself into the ground. I’ve never, ever sacked off a football match since the day I’ve stepped in there and I give it my all,” Thompson told the media.

“Granted, there have been times where I haven’t played well at all, but I’ll always give 110 per cent and what my body can give.”

Town boss Martin Ling revealed that he had been just about to withdraw Thompson before the midfielder’s match-winning goal to protect him from injury.

Although the 20-year-old, who went off shortly after nursing a tight groin, thinks he will be fit for Saturday’s trip to Chesterfield.

“My groin wasn’t feeling great before the goal and it certainly wasn’t feeling much better after my knee slide, but it was a much-needed three points,” Thompson added.

“It was just a bit tight and with the amount of injuries we’ve had this year, I didn’t want to risk it.

I was in slight discomfort and I wanted to keep myself right for Saturday.”

“Anton Rodgers was the perfect replacement for me, he goes in there and does the same job that I was doing, so there was no need for me to carry on.”
