LAUREN Booth had a right royal time of it as she swept up at the Manchester Paracycling Track International last weekend.

The 14-year-old, from Chippenham, shone as she dominated the Youth Omnium Challenge at the Manchester Velodrome, winning three events and coming within a whisker of setting a new world record – a feat she has technically achieved before.

In the flying 200m time trial, Booth, who represents Wales, clinched a new British record of 13.597 seconds, narrowly missing out on besting the current world record of 13.551, set by New Zealand’s Kate Horan.

In January, the Abbeyfield School pupil, who also won the 2000m pursuit (2:53.9 minutes) and 500m time trial (41.12 seconds), raced around the track in 15.129 seconds but was forced to settle for a ’world best’ – an unofficial record – due the absence of the invited dope testers.

And Booth’s day was rounded off by a chance meeting with Prince Harry following her triumphant display in the North West.

“We weren’t expecting to see Prince Harry,” said mum Lisajayne Booth.

“He was at the UNICEF football match at Manchester United’s ground but he had a friend that had served in Afghanistan competing in the event and he popped in to the venue to see him.

“Lauren rushed right in to get a photo and told him all about her national record.”
