MALMESBURY Victoria boss Alan Griffin was far from happy as they were dumped out of the FA Vase on penalties at home to Farnham Town.

The visitors, who had already knocked Highworth Town out of the FA Cup this season, fought back to snatch a late goal to take the game to spot-kicks, where they ran out 4-2 winners.

Malmesbury were able to take the game to extra time after Chris Salt scored with just two minutes to go to cancel out Farnham Town’s earlier strike.

Mark Corbett had put the hosts in front from the penalty spot before Salt was able to tap home after an Ed Wilkins shot was not held. Griffin himself handed the hosts the lead 20 minutes into the additional time when the ball was played into him in the box and he turned the defender to score from six yards.

However, they could not hang on as Ross Cheek scored with three minutes remaining to take the game to penalties, a decision that was made before the game, rather than a replay.

“We got ourselves right back in the game with two minutes to go and dominated the game, but didn’t take our chances,” said Griffin.

“When we scored in extra-time I thought that we were going to go on and win it, but we got a bit sloppy at the end and when it goes to penalties anything can happen.

“A couple of our guys missed and they took some good penalties and I was pretty gutted for the lads who put a lot into it.

“We lost in mid-week away at Wroughton, which wasn’t one of the best performances, but we out-played them this weekend and that is football.

“I think on any other day we would have won it in normal time.”

Griffin will now focus back on the league, something he is aiming to win, and Malmesbury face Corsham Town at the Flying Monk ground tomorrow evening.

“We’ll be back into the league tomorrow night and we have got to start winning some games again,” he added.

“We have drawn one and loss one in the last two, so we want to get back to winning ways and get back to the top of the table.

“That is our aim, to try and win the league, but it will be difficult because there are a number of good teams.

“If we put in a performance like we did on Saturday then we should win.”
