DEVIZES Town manager Darran Walters bemoaned his side’s lack of fight as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Westbury United in Division One.

The loss extends the Nursteed Road side’s run without a win to six games, which is becoming a worry for Walters.

Westbury opened the scoring when the visitors gifted Nathan Hallett-Young a free header from a corner in the 58th minute.

Devizes got themselves back into the game 10 minutes later when Bradley Whitbread got on the scoresheet but a mistake from goalkeeper Matt Tilley cost the visitors with five minutes to go.

Tilley dropped the ball from a Josh Ferguson free-kick and, after a goalmouth scramble, Mark Scammell was able to tuck the ball home.

Walters always anticipated a difficult campaign, but is asking more of his players who failed to respond on Saturday.

“We didn’t play very well and I was disappointed with the effort the lads put in,” he said.

“Westbury thoroughly deserved the points and I couldn’t argue with the result.

“I stressed to the lads before the game how important the match was, but they never really responded.

“We knew it was going to be tough this season and we have just got to keep going and keep our heads up.”

Devizes have moved to bring in some new faces to freshen up the squad, with Brett Partner joining from Saturday’s opponents and Dougie Dickson returning to the club, also from Westbury.

Walters now turns his attentions to the Wiltshire Senior Cup and he hopes playing Bemerton Heath Harlequins will be a welcome distraction.

“I’m glad we have got a week off from the league this week,” he added.

“We have got a couple of players back and we are looking to sign a couple of players this week as well.

“We are going to try a couple of different things and line up differently.

“I don’t know much about Bemerton Heath Harlequins, but we’ll hopefully have a better performance on Saturday.”
