FINANCES could play a key part in whether Swindon Town bring in any more recruits between now and the start of the season on Saturday.

Swindon captured the signature of Liverpool goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux yesterday, who impressed on trial against his parent club and West Brom the weekend before.

The 21-year-old becomes the seventh signing of the summer, joining fellow Liverpool loanees Jordan Williams and Kevin Stewart, as well as Jordan Turnbull, who has returned on a season-long loan, and permanent signings Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill, Drissa Traore and Fabien Robert.

Mark Cooper has admitted that due to the way Town are run, they have to rely on trialists and free transfers, having handed further trials to former AFC Bournemouth trainee Richie Whittingham and ex-Oldham winger James Dayton on Sunday.

Both 24-year-old Whittingham, who is a midfielder at Ben Gladwin’s former club Marlow, and Dayton, who notched in Oldham’s 2-2 draw against Swindon last season before being sent on loan to St Mirren, impressed the County Ground boss.

However, Cooper has admitted that the future of trialists such as Brad Barry, James Brophy, Richard Eckersley and Jeremy Balmy will essentially come down to their wage demands.

“We have to, with the way our club is financially, look at every possibility and every option,” said Cooper.

“People flag these players up and at this minute we’re just having a look. I’m going to have a chat with them.

"They’ve equipped themselves very well and it will come down to finance.

“We’ve got a small squad - we are going to have to have a small squad - but we want to fill that squad with as much quality as we can.”
