TROY Batchelor has high hopes for tonight’s British Grand Prix and has set his sights on qualifying for the semi-finals in Cardiff.

Swindon Robins skipper Batchelor endured a night to forget 12 months ago as he could only register a disappointing three points at his debut British GP.

The Australian ace failed to score in any of his first three rides at the Millennium Stadium, before notching a third and a second to give him something to show for his efforts as American Greg Hancock finished top of the pile.

Batchelor has again struggled in the Grand Prix Series so far this year, collecting just 13 points from the opening three meetings in Poland, Finland and the Czech Republic, but has no doubt he is capable of much better in Wales tonight.

“I didn’t go too well last year but it’s a fresh start in the GPs after six weeks off and I would say my form has been going pretty well,” said Batchelor, who will be joined on track by former Robins number one Peter Kildemand this evening.

“When I’ve been able to finish races, I’ve been good. My Polish form is going really well; I’m in the top five in the averages there and I’m feeling pretty good and pretty consistent with things.

“In the first half of last (GP) season, I was pretty pants but then I pulled my finger out and I made two finals and four or five semis.

“I’m looking for something special - maybe a semi this weekend will be enough but I want to go there and win as many races as I can and score as many points as I can.

“The last places hurt you, so I need to stay away from them and score points in every race.”

Batchelor has been blighted by bike problems in recent weeks but warmed up for the British GP with a solid 10+3 points as the Robins mauled Wolverhampton Wolves in the Elite League on Thursday.

“We have no Poland this Sunday so we’re all good,” added Batchelor.

“I’m happy my van made it over the French border. They told me how bad it was and there were fires and people being arrested trying to smuggle themselves into the country. That’s one thing I don’t have to worry about now and it’s full steam ahead for Cardiff.”
