WOOTTON Bassett Town have marked their move to their new home by taking on the town’s royal patronage.

The market town of Wootton Bassett was granted royal status in 2011 and the football club have accordingly changed their name to Royal Wootton Bassett Town.

After two years groundsharing at Cirencester Town’s Corinium Satdium, Bassett will relocate to the town’s new sports hub at Ballards Ash alongside its fellow Royal Wootton Bassett Sports Association’s members – the town’s tennis, cricket and running clubs – as well as the local rugby club.

Bassett, whose first team ply their trade in the Hellenic League Premier Division, have also updated their club crest.

Meanwhile, the club’s reserve side have moved from Division Two West of the Hellenic League to take the place of their now-defunct Development team in the Wiltshire League.

Dave Terry and Danny Groom will run Bassett’s reserves, supported by Ray Ellis and club development officer Jeff Tidy.

Commenting on the management changes, chairman Andy Walduck said: “I would like to thank both Wayne Petrie and Mark Varney for their efforts during their time with the club.

“Wayne, at the back end of the season, ran not only the Reserves, but the Development team too. He has now decided to stand down and take some time out with his family.

“Mark struggled to find the time for the Development team last season due to work commitments, which must take priority.

“Considerable effort was made by Mark to keep the Development team running though throughout the season, which the club thank him for.”
