WITH adrenaline overriding the pressure, Nick Morris says that he was able to keep his cool and maintain his fine form when he filled in at number one for the Swindon Robins earlier this week.

Polish ace Adrian Mieszinski was still ruled out with a long-term hand injury, while usual replacement Peter Kildemand was unavailable as Swindon took on Elite League table-toppers Coventry Bees on Tuesday night.

Thus, the responsibility fell on the shoulders of 20-year-old Morris but the young Australian refused to be knocked out of his stride as he racked up a 10+1 points haul to help the Robins triumph 47-43 at the Abbey Stadium.

Dane Kildemand will be back at the top of the order for the final appearance of his temporary return to Blunsdon when Alun Rossiter’s men travel to take on the Wolverhampton Wolves next Monday but Morris would have no qualms spearheading his team’s efforts again in the future.

“(Being picked at number one) means I’ve been riding good so far this season, so I’m happy with that but it’s still just as hard as number three,” he said.

“You’ve got the race the same guys just as many times so not much changes really, except you’ve got the number one on you.

“I probably do feel a little bit (of pressure) but once you get the helmet on you, everything like that goes away.

“I like Wolverhampton. It’s a pretty tricky track. I don’t know if we’re going to have another guest again but we’ll dig deep again and see what we can do.

“It’s a bit smaller but I think the lines are pretty similar. You can get off that inside off the corners and if you want to go around the outside, there’s dirt there to do that if you do it right.

The backbone of Morris’ success this term has been his fine exploitation of the inside line.

And with the tactic continuing to pay dividends, the Swindon youngster sees no need to deviate from his path.

He said: “It’s just the easy way. I’ve never really been passed around the outside, so there’s no point me trying to go wide if I don’t need to.

“I get a nice ride on the inside so I’m happy to stay there.”
