SWINDON Robins speedster Nick Morris is hoping that his international call-up is a watershed moment in his quest to evolve into a top-level rider.

The 20-year-old has represented Australia in the last three U21 World Championships and his fine form this term has been rewarded with a call-up to his country’s quartet for event two of the Speedway World Cup at King’s Lynn’s Adrian Flux Arena on June 8.

Morris’ first senior call-up will see him link up with Robins skipper Troy Batchelor next month as Australia take on Great Britain, the United States and Latvia and the Swindon youngster says that getting the nod has ignited a fire in his belly “I’m stoked with that. I wasn’t even thinking about it all year but I’ve just been trying to do good,” said Morris.

“The last week, it’s been there and I started thinking ‘maybe I could be in with a shot’.

“Then I started talking to Lemmo (Mark Lemon, Australia team manager) and he said ‘you might be in the top five’.

“I got the call up on Monday and I was stoked with that.

“He asked me ‘what happened there?’ because I had a terrible one at Glasgow (two disqualifications in a Premier League meeting with the Newcastle Diamonds) and I told him but he said ‘I’ve given you the gig at King’s Lynn’ and I was just pumped.

“It will be the biggest thing I’ve done in my career so I’m happy with that. Hopefully I can have a good one and get to that final.

“I think it’s the first step for me on the world stage so I want to make sure I do alright and keep doing well in the league in England.”

Batchelor won’t be the only other familiar Swindon face at the World Cup, with Robins team manager Alun Rossiter overseeing the Great Britain side.

Morris expects national pride to come before team loyalties however.

He added: “I’ll be sneaking over asking him for some tips but I don’t think he’ll be giving them to me.”
