MELKSHAM Town manager Darren Perrin aims to savour his team’s day of destiny when they bid to become Toolstation League Premier Division champions on Saturday.

The league’s top two sides meet in Devon this weekend as table-toppers Melksham, unbeaten in ten matches, travel to their nearest challengers Buckland Athletic, who have won 13 of their last 16 outings, and victory would send the Premier Division crown on its way to the Conigre.

A colony of four-legged amphibians may have put paid to Melksham’s hopes of promotion to the Southern League next term but for boss Perrin, that disappointment will do little to dampen the significance of a potential title triumph.

“What will be, will be but it’s going to be the biggest day in Melksham Town football club’s history,” said the Melksham chief, whose team were beaten 3-1 at home by Saturday’s antagonists Buckland in February.

“You’re in football for these kind of days. A lot of my players won’t have been involved in things like this and you hope that your experience of times at Paulton, Frome and Chippenham helps.

“Buckland have been on an incredible run and we’ve always kept an eye on them. I thought they were the best side we’ve played when they beat us 3-1 but saying that, we weren’t very good on the day either.

“They have played a lot of sides that haven’t had anything to play for in the last seven or eight weeks but that’s football.

“We know that we’ve already made history by achieving the highest finish in Melksham Town’s history but if we don’t win on Saturday, we could have another chance. If we lose, Buckland still have two very tough games against Slimbridge and Bradford.

“I think it would be a huge achievement to win the league. We don’t pay a penny and I’m only allowed three players who live outside of Melksham.

“I think that shows what a huge achievement it would be.”

Perrin has previously led Melksham to a Western League title, guiding the Conigre club to the First Division trophy in 1996-1997.
