A SCHOOLBOY is battling a brain injury after being run over just yards from his home.

Now Michael Reid and his family are campaigning for urgent safety measures before another child is seriously hurt.

Michael, 11, was hit by a car as he crossed Hunthill Road in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, last month.

The P7 pupil was taken to hospital with a serious head injury which has left his left-side coordination affected.

Although he is responding well to rehabilitation, Michael is still only able to go to High Blantyre Primary for 90 minutes a day.

He is being treated at Yorkhill and will have an MRI scan later this year to find out if his brain damage is permanent.

Michael's parents Jacqueline and Alex are furious no action has been taken to make the road safer since his accident on Monday, January 8.

Now they warn another child could be seriously injured unless a pedestrian crossing is installed.

They say motorists consistently drive too fast along the road, ignoring its Twenty's Plenty status.

Jacqueline, 42, who also has a daughter Donna, 10, and son Liam 23, said: "Michael has had a terrible time. We just hope his brain injury heals. He fell down the stairs one day because of it. His left foot just went from under him.

"The specialists say the best thing for him is sleep and he is really drained even after going to school for an hour and a half.

"It could take years for him to get better."

Jacqueline said the road was outside their home so the family could not avoid crossing it.

"It's very dangerous, it's full of blind corners," said the worried mum.

"Heavy goods vehicles use it and some mount the narrow pavement."

Residents living in and near Hunthill Road have been lobbying council bosses for years about the need for speed-reduction measures, and they want action now.

A spokesman for South Lanarkshire Council said: "Representatives from the council's roads department met with Mr and Mrs Reid after the accident and informed the couple road assessments would be carried out to establish whether any action is required.

"These assessments have taken place and proposals will be developed based on the findings.

"Once these proposals are drawn up we will meet to discuss them with Mr and Mrs Reid."

No action was taken against the driver.
