PLANS to turn Glasgow Harbour into a major retail centre are facing a legal challenge.
West Dunbartonshire Council is to object to proposals to extend the planning consent for a new development at Yorkhill Quay.
Site owner Peel Holdings wants to increase the 15,000 sq m area for non-food outlets to 43,000 sq m.
But the council believes this would damage moves to regenerate Clydebank.
The town's Clyde Shopping Centre had a £21.5m revamp in 2004 but 20 of its units lie vacant and trade continues to fall.
There are also fears the retail part of the £1.2billion riverside development will impact on Clydebank Rebuilt, the urban regeneration company which aims to attract millions of pounds of new investment.
West Dunbartonshire's move will mean the project's future will depend on the approval of the Scottish Executive.
Officials are expected to lodge a protest against Peel Holdings' revised plan tomorrow.
A spokesman for Glasgow Harbour, said: "We have analysed the cumulative impact of all established retail in the area including prospective developments and local town centres - the impact on all is minimal."
