HAVING been an unused substitute in England Under 20s penalty shoot-out win over Mexico on Wednesday, Jordan Turnbull is itching to get some game time against the USA on Sunday.

Of Swindon Town’s four players to get called up by Aidy Boothroyd for the pair of youth international friendlies only John Swift played a part against the Mexicans.

The Chelsea loanee came on for 20 minutes in the second half and scored the first spot kick, as England came from a goal down to win on penalties.

Wolves’ pair Kortney Hause and Dominic Iorfa, along with Bournemouth’s Baily Cargill, got the nod to start as the back three in England’s 3-5-2 on Wednesday night. That trio weren’t wholly impressive as the Mexicans dominated before the sending off of their keeper.

Whilst Turnbull would probably not admit it, their displays gave him a better chance of staking a claim, alongside teammate and Plymouth native Jack Stephens, against the Americans.

The defender, born and raised in Trowbridge, is more comfortable playing the 3-5-2 system employed by Boothroyd than some of his national teammates. He is yearning to impress his national boss what he can do having excelled playing the same way at Swindon this season.

“I’m delighted to be selected to play for my country, it’s a great honour,” said Turnbull.

“Obviously I didn’t come on against Mexico, but there’s another game on Sunday and hopefully I get the opportunity to show the manager what I can do.

“We’ve come in (to the Under 20s set-up) and tried to play the 3-5-2 formation, but the lads know it’s not going to come that quickly, it’s going to take time to get used to it.

“A few of us are playing it week-in-and-week-out so it’s a great opportunity for us to go out and show that we know that formation and we can play it really well.

“If I get the opportunity to play it’ll definitely be a boost when I return to Swindon, we’ve got a couple of big games coming up and I’m really looking forward to the next couple of weeks.”

Turnbull’s great friend and housemate, Stephens, Sunday presents an opportunity to play inn his hometown stadium.

Turnbull is delighted for his teammate and is hoping they can share the experience on the pitch together.

“Jack’s from Plymouth so he’s going to have a lot of friends and family to their watch,” he added. “I’m going to have lot of people there watching too, so hopefully we both get on.”

Meanwhile, Swindon took a team to Premier League outfit QPR to play a development game which the hosts ran out 6-1 winners with Jon Obika netting Town’s only goal.
