CHIPPENHAM Town pulled off the shock of the day in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division on the south coast when an 89th-minute goal from substitute Lee Phillips, who headed home Luke Ballinger’s cross, defeated table-toppers Weymouth.

The Bluebirds thoroughly deserved their victory as they dominated the first half and rebuffed a Weymouth revival in the second to secure the points.

On 10 minutes, a long clearance from keeper Kent Kauppinen ended with the unchallenged Luke Ballinger heading wide.

Just past the quarter of an hour mark, home keeper Jason Matthews just managed to snatch Ballinger’s cross off the toes of Alex Ferguson.

Ten minutes before the break Ashan Holgate’s cross was volleyed against a post by James Guthrie.

Weymouth’s Adam Kelly then saw his effort blocked whilst a swift Chippenham break ended with Steve Colwell making a last-ditch tackle on Ferguson.

Before the interval, Matt Coupe rescued the Bluebirds when he blocked an effort from George Rigg. After the break Mark Francis played in Ferguson but he was thwarted by Matthews.

At the other end, Kauppinen made a double save to deny Stewart Yetton and Rigg’s follow up. Weymouth then wasted chances through Yetton and Kelly before Phillips struck against his former club.
