JON Obika believes the strength in depth now in evidence at Swindon Town can only benefit the team as they push for promotion.

Last week, with Michael Smith out injured, Obika was paired with Andy Williams and both strikers were on the scoresheet as Town saw off Peterborough. The battle for the two starting roles at the sharp end of the Swindon side has been fierce all season - all three strikers have excellent goals-to-game ratios.

Now though, now with Jack Stephens excelling in the holding role, Ben Gladiwn and Jake Reeves providing good options further forward, as well as the different qualities Raphael Branco brings to the back line, Town appear to have depth in all areas of the squad.

Though Obika knows he will have to work hard to keep his own place, he is adamant having a variety of options in different positions will benefit the squad in the long run towards potential promotion.

“The competition is healthy when you’ve got people that can step in and if we’re going to continue doing well going forward we’re going to need a squad of players,” Obika told the Advertiser.

“I think this season there has been a lot of rotation in the forward line and whoever plays on Saturday will definitely do our best for the team.”

For Town and Obika Saturday will be a first as neither have taken on Fleetwood before but with the run of the form the side are on and the preparation done this week Obika is going in confident.

“In my career I don’t think I’ve played Fleetwood but we’ve done some work on them and I’m sure we’ll put into practice on Saturday,” he added.

“When you’re playing games week in and week out you get the confidence and we’re winning so I feel the team as a whole we’re in good spirits.”
