AGE group world champion James Coleman stormed to success at Castle Combe’s Chilly Duathlon event on Sunday.

Coleman, from Westwood near Bradford on Avon, became a world age group champion at the 2013 Duathlon World Championships in Ottawa, Canada and followed up with a bronze medal in Pontrevedra, Spain, in this year’s competition in June.

The Combe duathlon – two two-mile runs sandwiching a 10-mile bike section – saw a red-hot pace with Swimpodium’s Phil Kruse narrowly ahead of Coleman (ENVE/One Poll) and Benjamin Griffiths.

Coleman took over after the bike section, leading Chris Roxburgh, of Avon Valley Triathletes, and Robert Abraham and, by the finish, had extended his lead to win by more than a minute in 44:23 from Benjamin Griffiths (Team Wosskow Brown) and Abraham.

He said: “I was going into the race unsure of my form as I’ve done no speed work or structured training but the rain held off and it all went well.

“I’ve been running off-road once a week and it seems to be doing the trick.

“I’ve also been riding a harder fixed gear on my daily commute which may explain my fast bike split.

“Everyone went off like a bullet on the first run and I soon realised I needed to kick it up a gear and get to the front before anyone got too far ahead.’’

The ladies race was taken by Bath’s Nicole Walters, who dominated proceedings in 51:05, more than two minutes ahead of nearest rival Gwen Kinsey, of Stroud & District Athletics Club with Michelle Kerfoot, of Kingswood Tri Club, in third.

More than 1200 people attended the event, which also included a 10k race and the 2014 British University (BUCS) Championships.

More than 300 took part in the Chilly 10k, which opened the event.

Taking the overall win was George Frost, of Team Bath AC, in an impressive 32 minutes 51 seconds from teammate James Donald and Team 9Bar athlete Alistair Robinson.

The ladies were headed home by Fee Maycock, of Belgrave Harriers, in 38:21 from Elizabeth Smith (Westbury Harriers) and Amber Bullingham (Almost Athletes).

The university event saw Liam Lloyd (University of Leeds) finish in 42:22, ahead of the fast finishing Alex Matchett (University of Bristol) and Samuel Wade (Cardiff Metropolitan University).

The ladies race saw Oxford University’s Sophia Saller, the U23 world triathlon champion win by 25 seconds from Chloe Cook (Leeds Beckett University) and Grace France (University of Bristol).

DB Max are back with their February edition of the event on February 22.
