CHARLIE Ewels' reward for a fine performance during Bath's European Rugby Champions' Cup defeat to Toulouse last Saturday is the captaincy for this weekend's LV= Cup clash with London Welsh (3pm).

Ewels, a junior world champion with England U20s, earned rave reviews in a makeshift Bath back row during the 21-19 defeat to the four-time European champions at the Rec last weekend.

The regular lock forward slotted in at number eight and, along with Dominic Day and David Sisi, held their own against the blockbusting French trio of Thierry Dusautoir, Imanol Harinordoquy and Louis Picamoles.

Bath coach Toby Booth revealed today that the 19 year old will not only retain his place against the Exiles this weekend, but will lead the team out at the Rec.

"He played very well and looked like a seasoned pro, not like someone starting his first game (for the first team),'' said Booth.

"He has led well in the A League and his reward, if you like, is that he will captain the side this week.

"Charlie has worked really hard with Stuart Hooper (club captain). It's a great honour to captain the club. We feel it's right and fell his performance merits it.''
