MASSIMO Luongo revealed that the Town players are starting to anticipate having to find new ways of playing through their oppositions’ spoiling tactics.

It seems each week the opposition are less focused on their own game as they are with stopping Swindon - such is nature of the Robins’ possession-based football. Crewe initially tried to keep the ball in Town’s half, Sheffield United dropped deep and stayed compact and in their last three away games the opposition have tried to press high early in the game.

Plymouth and Yeovil were most successful, securing a win and a draw by getting ahead while they had the energy, as Town’s play only came to fruition later on.

However in all of those games, regardless of opposition tactics, Town have found a way to score. That gives Luongo the encouragement and confidence that the players and staff at the club will continue to find an answer to whatever question the opposition poses.

“We’re all expecting Rochdale to look at that game (Yeovil) and see what they’ve done to counter us,” said the Australia international.

“They’ll probably do the same thing or have their own way. We’re expecting something to stop us. It’s just whether or not we’re good enough to overcome it, or we figure out a way of getting out. We always do and we trust the coaches that they will as well.

“We’ve got a way of playing this year and everyone is trusting the system, trusting the coaches, even if it’s not going the way we want it to.

“Even if you guys (the media) think it’s a bad performance in the first half or whatever, we’re still trusting it and it comes through. The more games we play at it and the more we practice the better we’ll get at it.”

Luongo of course has been getting a different kind of practice when he goes away with Australia, something he enjoys but insists it’s not a distraction to playing for Swindon or changing him as a person.

“It’s something I want to be a part of obviously,” he added. “It was different conditions for me, it’s nothing I’ve experienced before. It was almost 38 degrees in the first game and we picked up a draw. It’s all new to me, the experience, the routines and all that.

“Of course (I’m looking forward to going away with Australia in November) but I don’t worry about it. If it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t change my lifestyle, it doesn’t change anything. I‘ll just get on with Swindon and that’s all I’ll worry about. Hopefully it happens, obviously it’s good for anyone.

“When I’m there I focus on them, when I’m here I focus on Swindon.”
