SWINDON Town will be seeking to extend the contract of midfielder Jake Reeves as a result of his excellent start to life at the County Ground.

Reeves arrived on the eve of the draw with Coventry just over a month ago, signing a contract until January. Since then the 21-year-old has made one start and come on for four appearances from the bench, scoring one goal – that coming in Town’s 3-0 win at Barnsley last weekend.

While those raw stats may not compare with the now-injured striker Jon Obika, with whom Reeves shared a debut, it is the nature of those brief performances that have caught the eye.

The former Tottenham trainee adds a layer of silk to pretty much everything he does on the football pitch, which fits in beautifully to Mark Cooper’s preferred style of possession football.

The Town boss has been impressed by Reeves, hardly ever turning down an opportunity to heap praise on his midfielder. Now it appears Cooper ready to offer his charge a contract extension.

“If he (Reeves) keeps playing like he is then I’m sure that we’ll be looking to do something,” said the County Ground chief when questioned on the matter.

“He’s done really well since he’s come to the club. His attitude has been very, very good, he’s had to be patient.

“I always say to the boys make sure you’re ready when you come on.

“Every time he’s come on he’s affected the game.

“You have to make sure eight/nine times out of 10 you bring the right ones in. At the moment the recruitment is going well.”

Meanwhile, Obika is hopeful that he will be able to return ahead of the 12 weeks the club orginally feared.

The striker, who injured his shoulder during at Barnsley, went for a surgical assessment in London yesterday.

And after seeing the specialist, the former Tottenham forward tweeted: “Positive news today! I’ll be back sooner than expected!! #stfc #GodIsGood”
