NATHAN Byrne said that he received texts from his parents on the morning of Swindon Town’s 3-0 win a Barnsley telling him it was about time that he scored.

In his man-of-the-match display at Oakwell, the right wing-back opened his Town account for the season in the 58th minute, before setting up Jake Reeves for his goal, eight minutes from time.

Now that Byrne had given his mum and dad the perfect response, the former Tottenham youngster said that he would not being rushing to return their texts.

“I think I will wait for them to reply once they have seen the score line and then who scored,” Byrne said after the match.

“My dad sent me a message ‘are you going to score today? It is about time’, then my mum sent me a text saying ‘any chance of you scoring?’ And then the gaffer said you ain’t scored yet.

“It is good to get off the mark.”

While Byrne was pleased to notch his first goal of the season, his assist for Jake Reeves’ goal was his fifth of the campaign, and the 22-year-old is looking forward to adding to that tally.

“The main thing for me is making assists, I got another one today, to chip in with a goal is always great,” he said.

“If I set out to get five (assists) after this many games I would be happy with that, I have got to push on and keep getting them really.”
