Alun Rossiter has got the two year itch as he aims to guide his Swindon riders to the Elite League title for a second time and a third for him.

Two years ago Rossiter ended Swindon’s 45-year wait for a top flight British speedway title with a two-legged victory over Poole Pirates.

Now, after suffering the heartache of being eliminated at this stage last year when the Poole Pirates exacted their revenge for 2012, Rossiter is determined to give his side a shot at the title.

The Robins’ boss is full of confidence ahead of tonight’s meet with Coventry Bees, who Rossiter led to the Elite League Trophy in 2010.

Unlike two years ago, when Swindon headed to Birmingham lacking form, Swindon finished this year strongly.

“It was a great experience (winning the title two years ago), I have won it twice now, first in Coventry in 2010 and then in 2012, maybe it could be the two year itch, 2012 and then 2014 it kind of has a ring to it,” said Rossiter.

“There is no better feeling. That is what it all comes down to at the end of the season, winning that title.

“We all know that it is a play-off system so we can’t all moan; it’s like rugby, so we have to make sure that we are in the final again.

“We come in on a bit of a high, in the past our form has come in on a bit of a drop down and we have kind of struggled a little bit and only just scraped through in 2012.

“This year we seem the other way round, we are coming in on form.”

The Robins sent out a strong message to their play-off rivals earlier this month when they took apart the Coventry Bees at the Abbey Stadium with a 60-31 victory.

Despite the slip-up away to Belle Vue in their last meet of the season, many bookmakers have Swindon down as the favourites to lift the title again.

But Rossiter insists that it is now a clean slate and that result will have no bearing on how they Coventry will perform tonight.

“Whoever we got we always know it is going to be tough because we are at the main end of the competition now,” he added.

“I think previous results count for nothing now and we all start again now.

“I am sure the boys will be feeling confident, I still think because of what it is and how it is it will be terribly different this time.

“We are going there to win or keep it as close as you can.

“It is a track we don’t fear, I think looking at what Matt Forbes said on the TV, I certainly get the impressions that they (Poole Pirates) weren’t comfortable about going to Coventry in the first leg.

“I think it is the fact the track has been quite inconsistent there is why Poole chose King’s Lynn.

Rossiter is confident that his number one rider, Peter Kildemand, the club’s rider of the year when they lifted the league title two years ago, will find his form against Coventry.

KIldemand bowed out early from the Elite League Riders’ Championship, won by teammate Batchelor, at King’s Lynn on Thursday, but that was due to bike trouble, rather than any rider issue.

“Pete is obviously in fine form he has done well in the Grand Prix, just a little bit unfortunate in the Grand Prix Challenge but I have no worries about Pete,’’ added the team boss.

“He only has this to concentrate on now. He has no Grands Prix, no other play-offs, so I think he will be important for us.

“I will tell the players just to go out and win; it is as simple as that, it is more money for them at the end of the day.”
