OLDHAM Athletic boss Lee Johnson has revealed that the Latics were interested in taking Jon Obika to Boundary Park.

The 24-year-old striker, who marked his Swindon Town debut with a brilliant brace at Bradford City on Saturday, re-joined the County Ground side on transfer deadline day from Tottenham Hotspur.

Obika, who signed a two-year deal after Town chairman Lee Power splashed out a six-figure fee thought to be in the region of £200,000, is set to make his home bow tonight against the club who tried to sign him this summer.

Johnson is all too aware that Swindon are more than just a one-man team.

“We were interested in Obika but missed out,” Latics boss Johnson said. “They have got threats all over the pitch, but we feel that we have too.

“They are a good side. I really like their midfield, which has some top-quality players in it.”

Despite Oldham’s good results against Town over the last couple of seasons – the Latics have only lost one of the last four meetings – Johnson knows that it is going to be tough for his team tonight.

“We have had a decent record against them recently, but it doesn’t mean anything,” he said.

“They play a strange 3-5-2 and mix it up in a way that is interesting from a tactical point of view.

“I like the manager Mark Cooper and he has done well. He’s a good guy.”
