Darren Perrin says he wouldn’t swap strikers Gary Higdon and Dan Kovacs for any other partnership in the league after they starred in  back-to-back victories.

Higdon failed to find the net in his first five matches but opened his account with a hat-trick in Saturday’s 6-4 win over Street as his strike partner Kovacs marked his return from injury with a brace. Dave Thompson grabbed the other goal.

On Monday two goals from Higdon and Kovacs’ third in two games saw Perrin’s men beat Longwell Green Sports 3-0 at the Conigre.

“Having Dan Kovacs back from injury has been a massive boost for us and it’s no surprise we’ve started scoring goals now we’ve got him and Gary Higdon up front,” said the Melksham manager.

“I know there’s always a little bit of bias in it but you can look at Sam Jordan and Dan King at Bradford (Town) and they’re both fantastic, talented, players, but I wouldn’t swap our two for anyone.

“The effort has been magnificent from the players this week because we were feeling a bit sorry for ourselves after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Longwell Green and being beaten convincingly by Slimbridge.

“We put them through some hard training sessions but the effort after that has been fantastic and now we’re one of the top scorers in the league.”

Melksham face an injury crisis after Thompson was stretchered off with a knee injury on Monday. Ryan Bennett returns from suspension for the FA Vase clash with Pewsey Vale but Dean Flockton, Sean Benison, Steve Casey, Jamie Broom, Nick Ridout and Luke Smith are all out.
