JOSH Lelan could be in line to return to the Swindon Town squad for this Saturday’s League One clash with Coventry City.

The Derby County youngster saw his work experience deal come to an end at the County Ground last weekend with Town boss Mark Cooper refusing to be drawn on the defender’s future.

Following Tuesday’s night heartbreaking Capital One Cup defeat to Brighton, all the Town chief would say about Lelan was “Josh has gone back to Derby.”

However, the Advertiser spotted the 19-year-old back in Swindon yesterday lunchtime with Jordan Turnbull and Ben Gladwin.

The club were refusing to be drawn on the spotting of Lelan when contacted the Advertiser.

During Lelan’s first spell at the club he started in the opening day of the season 3-1 victory over Scunthorpe United, and also came off the bench in the 2-2 draw at Gillingham to replace Massimo Luongo.

Given the number of injuries that Town have at present, Gladwin (ankle), Michael Smith (shoulder), George Barker (discolated shoulder), Andy Williams (back), Anton Rodgers (knee), as well as Nathan Thompson suspended, Cooper is desperate to bring fresh faces.

“All of them are really big doubts for Saturday,” Cooper said before revealing that he only had 10 fit players.

If the lad is back its good news. He is good with ball at feet and no more light weight than Nathan. Plenty of scope to develop. Maybe the club are signing him on a perm. We can only play so many loanees with more to come no doubt.

The folly of having a small squad, but I can understand why the squad is small with the club so financially strapped.
However we apparently only have ten fit (11 with Lelan ) and available players which doesn't look good. Seems like the whole forward line is injured with no apparent back up unless Cooper gets someone in today.

But in the bigger picture if these ten (11) players can't get results then the gates will dwindle even more equaling reduced revenue. It's a fine and delicate balancing act to keep the club afloat even when the team is doing well but with low attendances and indifferent results things can only get worse.
Before anyone points out that we havn't done too badly so far I'll remind them that what we've achieved to date has been with a near full squad. I'll be interested to see tomorrows team sheet, I think Power might need to bring his boots .

On a lighter note did anyone read the story of a young lad from abroad went for a trial at Walsall but went to WBA ground by mistake, when he eventually arrived at Walsall he was told to apply in writing :-).
Anyone got contact details for this lad ? we could use him tomorrow .

They never mentioned him coming here because they probably didn't know he was with us.
That's why they are on the beach, and not going to west ham Saturday.

If Willo and Smith are injured surely we must have a right of recall on Storey who is after all our player at the end of the day. I dont feel he would ever be first choice striker but defo feel he is a better option that Waldon. I do get the point Cooper makes in terms of there being a two week break but can already see the Adver headline for the next ten days being "Cooper hoping to boost numbers by weekend" - when is it actually going to happen. If they know the targets and want to get them in why can't they have done the deals by now - there is not even a RUMOUR of a single new signing......

I wonder what Cooper really thinks about this situation.

His passing style is winning plaudits at every game we play, he has shown how he can improve young players on a shoestring budget, and he has always kept STFC in the top third of the table.

As managers start to come and go I wouldn't be surprised if his name starts attracting interest, like Appleton did at Pompey.

Presumably Power wants to keep him, I think he needs to support his manager better with player recruitment. Appreciate the financial situation and that Cooper knew the situation when he took it on, also that he would be grateful for being given the chance, but loyalty is a fickle thing in football and the situation is desperate.

With respect to Randall and Waldron, we have no recognised fit strikers, and no depth to the side whatsoever as the injury crisis shows. Power needs to get bodies in today.

The only thing that goes against Cooper is that he does have Ward and Harley available so he could have 2 more bodies in the squad, and also the Australian striker on trial could be given a chance in a proper game, so although we're 4 down from Tuesday night, we have potentially 3 available, plus if Lelan returns make that 4. Maybe though Cooper is content with giving the youngsters a chance although I bet he would prefer Power had brought in that Championship striker who was on the bench from a few weeks back whoever that was.

I'd like to address the Harley Ward question. Power and Cooper have decided they are not for us. It's really harsh especially on Ward to tell them they won't play whatever but it's the best way to get them off the books. As hard as that is to the players it will make them realise they have no future here and they need to get on their bikes if they want to play. If of course they want to take the cash for doing nothing they can also do that but generally there are many who do that.

I don't think we'll be good enough with the youth players but interested to see them none-the-less. You just never know we might unearth a gem that helps us into the play-offs later in the year!!

I suppose that I am not being popular, but last season there were some games where I thought that Ryan Harley was our best player.
I really dont understand why Mark Cooper has decided to freeze him out of the squad this season.

Old Stager I don't know either . As it happens I wasn't keen on Harley as his style was a bit languid for me. My point really was whilst you could argue its not fair on the players it does leave them in doubt that their future isn't here so they need to make a decision. Its hard ball and not very pleasant but it's definitely done in the interest of the club to keep the % of their salaries down to a minimum.

On Storey I'm assuming we have no recall. He's been sent to Portsmouth to get games, learn his trade and then I'm guessing replace Williams next year - or at the very least be used against Williams in negotiation over salary as when his contract is up Power clearly isn't going to pay him what he was paid under Black & Wray. Just how I see it before anyone jumps on me....

I have also just been on to the Football League website to look at the youth loans. If I'm correct and Stephens could be got under the youth loan system those loans may be done up to seven days after the end of the transfer window. He is only 20 so I'm assuming this applies? (if anyone knows better than my skim read)?

Think we'll be up against it tomorrow but looking forward to it and still remain optimistic for the season. We're playing great football people. we're playing great football. Get down to Mecca to watch it!!!

Waldon was very impressive indeed against Brighton - more so than Storey. Great control, brought others into the game, had a very good move and shot that might have brought a goal, and for his age looked very strong and skilful. I would have no qualms about giving him more game time. Could be a real gem.
Waldon was very impressive indeed against Brighton - more so than Storey. Great control, brought others into the game, had a very good move and shot that might have brought a goal, and for his age looked very strong and skilful. I would have no qualms about giving him more game time. Could be a real gem. california andy
