  • REPORTING BY TOM BASSAM AND MICHAEL REEVES

5:43pm

Media scrum over that means that we're finished with Matchday Live until Tuesday night when we return for the visit of Brighton in the League Cup.

A good win for Town and thanks for sticking with us.

5:24pm

Mark Cooper is in the media room:

"Crewe came for a point. I didn't feel we were ever in trouble and I'm glad we got the three points."

"Yaser has lost about 25 balls at the training ground, I've got thorn scratches all over trying to find them but it was well worth it for a goal like today."

"We have 14 players at the moment, we're short on depth but we're working bringing in players."

"We thought Massimo had a chance to play last night but there was no improvement overnight so we gave him a rest."

5:19pm

Louis Thompson is speaking to the press:

"I thought we dominated possession.

"They came out to press us all over pitch and the lads dealt with that well.

"Ben's (Gladwin) been brilliant so far this season.

"We believe in ourselves, in how we play, we work on that week on week, it paid off today.

"We put on a real footballing show today."

FULL-TIME SUMMARY

A deserved Town win against a poor Crewe side. Williams and Kasim's goals both good quality and Swindon's patient possession game reaps the rewards. Brad Smith was lively and showed signs of why he received his first Australia call-up this week.

4:54pm

It's all over here and Town get the comfortable win, their first in the league since Scunthorpe on the opening day.

4:53pm

91 mins: Turnbull shows good compusre to marshall a threatening Crewe break out of harms way, the ball was bouncing around the box dangerously there.

4:52pm

YOUR VIEW
Counting a few chickens but probably about right.

4:51pm

89 mins: Gladwin replaced by George Barker. Three minutes of added time announced.

4:50pm

Town appear to be playing this out now. Groans from the crowd are understandable as the ball returns to Foderingham once more but the Swindon defence must want that first clean sheet.

4:48pm

Yaser Kasim announced as Town's man of the match over the PA, probably fair.

4:47pm

Crewe are throwing the ball forward now.

4:47pm

Billy Waters is through the middle for Crewe now with Vadaine Oliver on the right of the front three and Inman on the left.

4:45pm

Attendance 6,513 with 133 from Crewe.

4:45pm

83 mins: Double change for Crewe, Oliver and Inman on for Haber on Molyneux.

4:44pm

82 mins: Barthram comes on for B Smith. The young Aussie has had a decent afternoon.

4:43pm

81 mins: Cooper calling for his side to push up as Crewe have the ball in their half. Tootle has a decent strike from distance but it drifts wide.

4:39pm

Really pleased for Andy Williams, a thoroughly nice guy getting back to his best after a long injury.

4:38pm

Williams powered into the area and showed great composure to get his second in two games.

4:37pm

76 mins: Goal from Williams!

4:37pm

75 mins:  Another short routine but the ball sails though at the far post from B Smith

4:36pm

Gladwin is a tall lad, I don't undertand why he isn't put in the box for corners.

4:36pm

74 mins:  Williams can't get a ball in from the right but does win a corner.

4:34pm

73 mins:  The visitors are enjoying their longest spell of attacking possession for a while. Nothing doing yet.

4:33pm

71 mins: Foderingham flaps at a cross and that in truth his the closest Crewe have come to a chance. Turnbull clears up the danger.

4:31pm

70 mins:  He nearly does! Garratt tipping Kasim's attempt over the bar.

4:30pm

69 mins: L Thomspn wins a cheap free-kick 30 yards out, Kasim over it again. Can he repeat the trick?

4:28pm

61 mins: It's a poor corner from B Smith but it dribbles out to L Thompson. His strike is scuffed wide.

4:27pm

65 mins: M Smith does well to force a coner out of Dugdale.

4:25pm

63 mins: B Smith, far improved from Tuesday, forces a corner by using his pace to get around the outside and cross. The set-piece goes short and comes to nothing.

4:24pm

YOUR VIEW
Little reason to get twitchy so far, Swindon in complete control.

4:22pm

60 mins: Town allowed all the time in the world to build up to a flashing Byrne cross, neither M Smith or Williams can get near it.

4:19pm

So far this has been very easy for Swindon in this half. Crewe look devoid of ideas, not much of the attacking football they promised.

4:18pm

YOUR VIEW
They nearly did.

4:17pm

54 mins:  M Smith strikes the crossbar! Gladwin plays a through ball out to the left for B Smith and his floated cross finds his namesake. M Smith gets up well and beats Dugdale but sees his header hit the frame of the goal.

4:15pm

53 mins: Patient build-up from Swindon ends in a low cross from Byrne which Garratt gets down to claim.

4:12pm

Billy Waters hasn't shown much of his early season form so far today, a cross-field ball towards him is mis-controlled and runs out of play - very poor.

4:11pm

49 mins: A cheeky dinked ball from Byrne finds M Smith but on the stretch his volley is harmless.

4:10pm

47 mins: First action of the second half. A neat interchange near halfway between Gladwin and M Smith allows the midfielder a run at the box. Gladwin checks and crosses for M Smith but the big striker fouls in his attempt to win the header.

4:06pm

Second half is underway.

4:06pm

LOAN WATCH

It's 0-0 in Oxford, can Miles break their resistance? Let us know on #stfcadver.

4:04pm

I say teams, so far just it's Crewe. Maybe Davis has sent them out early to get a reaction in the second 45.

4:03pm

Teams emerging for the second half.

3:58pm

HALF-TIME SUMMARY

Crewe looked bright in the early stages but faded badly. Town took the game on from the 20th minute onward, creating a number of chances before taking the lead through Kasim. It was a well deserved advantage by the break with only one team in it and the home side dominating possession.

3:51pm

HALF-TIME, TOWN LEAD 1-0.

3:50pm

46 mins:  Swindon working a number of their corners short. Perhaps that's a reaction to their recent failures to produce much from set-piece dominance.

3:49pm

45 mins: Two minutes of added time to come.

3:48pm

45 mins: Gladwin curls in a shot from the edge, Garratt saves well.

3:48pm

Town are absolutely dominating the ball here, over 64% possession at the moment. Crewe's early invention has all but disappeared.

3:46pm

41 mins: B Smith has looked good so far today, he has another dangerous effort. Striding in from the right he works along the byline and gets a shot in that could have dribbled over had  it not been dealt with.

3:43pm

40 mins: Byrne forces a corner, B Smith to take.

3:41pm

YOUR VIEW

3:40pm

You'd have to say Town deserved that goal. On the balance of chances created, it had been coming.

3:38pm

34 mins: Atkinson on for Ness as Steve Davis makes an early first change, the Stoke loanee looked to have picked up a hamstring injury.

3:37pm

GOAL FOR TOWN!

Kasim's free-kick is a beauty and it finds the top right corner, great strike. Cooper will be hoping the Iraqi FA were watching that one.

3:35pm

31 mins: Louis Thompson is fouled 25 yards out from goal, Gladwin and Kasim lining it up.

3:34pm

Smith looks to have been really working on his link play recently, he's far more aware of those around him than last season.

3:33pm

28 mins: A flurry of chances for Swindon. Tootle has to be aware to clear Byrne ball with Williams arriving, but his header only finds B Smith. Smith gets off two shots which Garratt saves well. More like it from Town.

3:31pm

28 mins: Williams goes down in the box looking for a penalty, nothing doing from referee Lee Collins.

3:30pm

27 mins: Another chance for Town. Byrne gets in a good low cross that M Smith leaves for Williams whose shot is blocked.

3:29pm

26 mins:  Louis Thompson gets on the end of a ball from Michael Smith, Garratt has to to be alert to save.

3:29pm

23 mins: Williams and Smith are looking bright as a partnership. Williams just a tried a little backheel trying to find his fellow striker, it didn't come off but that was an encouraging sign.

3:26pm

22 mins: Brad Smith refound his range with a dangerous low cross, Garratt takes it with Williams certain to score if he didn't.

3:25pm

21 mins: Ben Gladwin creates the clearest chance of the game so far. Three Town players worked to steal the ball in midfield and Gladwin emerged with hit. He timed his pass well to find Kasim in the box but the Iraqi's low angled drive is saved by Garratt.

3:23pm

Rain starting to come down here at SN1.

3:23pm

19 mins: As I type that the Liverpool loanee earns groans from the crowd after an overhit ball into the box.

3:22pm

18 mins: Brad Smith gets in on the action, he makes a burst down the left, to the delight of those in the Don Rogers. His early cross finds Byrne but he can't find a centre and the ball goes out for a throw-in. Promising from B Smith.

3:19pm

16 mins: Kasim surprises everyone with a strike at goal but it's harmless.

3:18pm

15 mins: Town have a free-kick, right side of the area 30 yards from goal, Kasim over it.

3:16pm

13 mins: Nathan Byrne gets in his first cross of the piece, it's testing but Tootle deals with it well at the back post.

3:15pm

OUR VIEW

3:14pm

11 mins: Town seem happy to knock the ball around at the back. The crowd are urging them forward.

3:11pm

Early signs show Town might not have it all their own way today. Crewe looking to play far more than any of Swindon's last three opponents at this stage.

3:09pm

7 mins: ... that comes to nothing.

3:09pm

6 mins: The free-kick strikes the wall and goes out for a corner.

3:08pm

5 mins: Crewe show their first signs of life as Branco is bypassed by a through ball, N Thompson concedes a free-kick 30 yards from goal.

3:06pm

YOUR VOTE RESULTS

3:05pm

2 mins: Town's first attack comes after some patient play from the back ended with Andy Williams crossing, but it's too deep.

3:03pm

... And we're off.

3:02pm

A minute's applause in memory of former Town player and Hall of Famer, George Hudson, is beautifully conducted by the County Ground fans.

3:00pm

The teams are out here Town, of course, in red. Crewe in an all navy number with some sky blue trim, oo-er.

Andy Williams, whose goal against Gillingham the other night was a real gem, was very gracious about Town's medical staff after the game.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

Town-wise Louis Thompson returns from suspension with Massimo Luongo judged not fit enough. That means Ben Gladwin retains his place in central midfield and after his goalscoring start so does Andy Williams.

2:27pm

Crewe will line a up in 4-3-3, with the only changes from their last fixture Jon Guthrie coming in at left-back and Lee Molyneux replacing Brad Inman on the left of the front three.

Robins skipper Nathan Thompson said in his column in the matchday programme that the teams are aiming for perfection.

He said: "We’ve heard criticism from some of our fans and we appreciate your frustration. To go behind twice against Gillingham despite 67% possession doesn’t seem fair but, ‘Lady Luck’ must have been on their side for them to capitalise on the only two chances they had.

"However, we play with the correct ethos so I believe that if we continue in the same way the results have to come. As the Gillingham anomalies show, the margin for error is very small, so this means we have aim for perfection – and we’re committed to getting results for our fans."

Town boss Mark Cooper has been pleased with how his team have started the campaign. In today's match programme he said:

"I think we’ve been really good and I’m pleased with the start we’ve made to the season. Yes, we’ve conceded some soft goals – I think that’s the nature of the age of the boys we’ve got but we need to keep on working on that and make sure we eradicate those mistakes. I think football-wise we’ve been fantastic and we are slowly but surely getting a reputation as being a good football team, which is want we want. Yes, we want to win games as well but it a process that will bear fruit the longer it goes on."

Good afternoon and welcome to Matchday Live from the County Ground.

Swindon Town will be searching for their first win in three League One matches when they entertain Crewe Alexandra.

Mark Cooper's men have been playing some attractive football this term, but they have conceded some soft goals and have lack a creative edge between the midfield and the attack.

Comfortable win by all accounts. Good start to the season so far and great to see Williams getting on the scoresheet. Must be very satisfying for him after so long on the sidelines and will hopefully shut up the boo boys for a few weeks.

Interesting to see Storey substituted after 64 mins for Pompey. Also, a historical irony to see Accrington and Oxford propping up the football league.

Just back in from what was a relatively comfortable win. Didn't really get out of 3rd gear, but in truth they didn't need to.

Williams and Smith looked fairly good together, Nathan Byrne good option and always available on the right and Kasim always looks like he has all the time in the world with both feet when on the ball, and rather cleverly used the first free kick as a sighter for a superb opening goal.

Brad Smith on the oft has tons of energy and is lightning quick, but just needs to practice his crossing, although he did fizz in a brilliant cross in the first half which Williams was unlucky not to get on the end of.

3 points and a clean sheet -can't ask for much more than that can you?
Only real low, the crowd was low in numbers but it is holiday season i suppose

Roll on Tuesday when we can knock Big Sami out the League Cup!

All in all a well deserved win although you'd have to say Crewe didn't offer much and Brighton will be more of a test on Tuesday. Some good approach play that was sometimes spoilt by the final ball and in the 2nd half Byrne the most culpable when three times in succession he crossed straight at the keeper. Smith B. needs to practice taking corners after two or three poor centres that didn't get anywhere near the target men. Toss up for me for MOM between Yaser & Wilma and I'd have probably given it to Williams because of his 1st half showing and his well taken goal from open play.
Encouraging signs but we must surely face stiffer tests than today.

Yep agree with your post Jock, Wilma mom for me too, ( I see Joan scored today too lol ) we were in total control today, think Crewe had only 1 shot on target, hope Brighton put their best side out, then we will get an idea of where we are? Crewe just parked the bus, Brighton will come and have a go should be a very good game, well done today lads, now lets see if we can step it up against a good Brighton side, if they play their best side?????

Fate to be decided this week according to BBC Wiltshire.
Decent enough today but did not need to do much against a poor Crewe side who were shocking at times especially up front. We did labour and struggled to finish them off to be honest but this was mostly good keeping and poor finishing and also poor final balls. If we had a good finisher who can read the game and get on the crosses before the keepers we would certainly be doing better with the many chances we create I feel. Missed Luongo today but were lucky it was Crewe I suppose as a better team may have given us a sterner test. All in all the right result and 3 points was very important.

Encouraging signs but we must surely face stiffer tests than today.
agreed!

Dazzler, agreed not much atmosphere but not likely with half empty town end. Reasons for poor crowd? Another game Tuesday and some have probably chosen to see Brighton over Crewe if finances a reason, no trains into Swindon over this w/e probably another factor, holiday season and some perhaps who think we've not got the quality to do well so are staying away until they see how things pan out.
Conversely when buying my ticket this morning a guy at the other window asked for a ticket for the north stand and then said "if it's still called that I haven't been in years". Let's hope he saw enough to attract him back again.

Impossible to draw any conclusions from that game. Crewe were shocking. Our defence won't have an easier game all season and Kasim, excellent though he was, could have read the paper and done the crossword with the time he was afforded by Crewe. Agree with Jock et al about Williams. He showed everything that made many of us rate him so highly in the first place. Now he's shaken off that injury, here's hoping for more of the same.

Would agree with your thoughts DKO. Their goalie was made to look good as he held onto nearly every cross from Byrne's, if Smithy had got himself on to some of those crosses he could have had a hat full, he did work hard running the flanks, but I would prefer him to stay in the middle and score goals. Williams had a good game and scored a great goal. In midfield Yaser and Gladwin played well and were dominant although Ben tired in second half and should have been rested for Tuesday a lot sooner than Cooper decide to make a change. Well satisfied with Brad Smith and Jordan Turnbull is growing in confidence.

The concerns for me in the first 20 minutes were the Thompson's, mistimed tackles, poor passing and Louis missed a couple of chances, both got better and to be fair redeemed themselves after a poor start, but against a better team their early mistakes could have been costly.
If we get the expected centre half arrive, I'm not sure where Cooper is going to play Nat, a centre half he is NOT and he isn't going to replace Byrne's on present form. He could play as a sweeper, but then we would have to sacrifice a mid-fielder and at the moment with Luango returning it will be a toss up between his brother and Ben Gladwin for that third place, so where will Nat fit in? nice for Cooper to have such a choice, I think both the Thompson's are good players for us but need to improve their concentration and discipline and stop conceding the ball cheaply with mistimed tackles and wayward passing. Thankfully no yellows today and Den will be pleased to hear i thought the ref was excellent for both sides, if only we could have him every week.

Without exaggeration it could have easily been 10-0 today, with so much possession we really should be putting teams like Crewe to the sword, but never the less we are in the play-off positions so can't complain too much.

As comfortable as win as you get,i think it will be better when we play the better sides as we will be forced to raise the pace.
One slight negative for me today was that we did not really go for more goals at 2-0,goal difference could come into play at the end of the season.
Kasim was MOTM for me also, Williams had a good game also and another beauty of a finish, good move to keep him.

When we have to sell a player to pay for our existence then I expect more moans will follow from those who remain happy to moan from the outside.

On a more happier note a wonderful drive into the County whose team prop up the FL. Happy days.

I think JB its back to you - no one else is bothered if there is a case of multi whotsits.
Good result yesterday, did sound like a bit of a easy game against an out of form side , but those games can be hard when they park the bus.
Willo seems to have found his scoring boots which is another plus.

No matter what the size of the actual crowd, would have been nice to hear more from the fans especially when we were attacking the Town End and pushing for a goal. We have to get behind the team and make the County Ground a horrible place to come for opposition teams.

Professional job done today, 3 points and a clean sheet. Brighton and Coventry will be sterner tests and a better gauge of where we are but so far the signs are good

For all those writing off Stephens to confirm he wasn't in the squad for Southampton yesterday. Fingers crossed. I remain optimistic and of course delighted to see the yellow prop the league up.....

You Don't need to put money into a club to support them it just comes natural.
No one gave me a rebate away at Sheffield united Last season in fact not even apology, from the manager or club.
Anyway we should move on from the free ticket debate untill Tuesday.

Yes your right Dazza, the owner has so far spent £10m , but their average gates are only 2,800, just shows fair play means nothing, cause their playing budget on 2,800 would be tiny, so clubs can still buy success the rules are a waste of time! the population of Fleetwood is only 27,000, so what sort of gates can they expect to get if they can go higher???????

Just back from hols- so catch up time ! well, looks like centre of defence could be an issue again , but with Nathan getting used to his new role , Turnball still settling in and Branco - still needs time to gel maybe, could still do with a Troy like in there though - good to see Wilma scoring ( jock ) hopefully he can go on from here and rediscover his true form , would like to see another striker to put pressure on Smith and Williams , otherwise not a bad start , sterner tests ahead though and the winter months hence heavier pitches , hopefully the experiences gained from last season will have benefited them in this quarter .

10,000 then Tuesday with cut prices ?
Doubt it very much, sad really as the lads are doing their bit on the pitch.
When we have to sell a player to pay for our existence then I expect more moans will follow from those who remain happy to moan from the outside.

On a more happier note a wonderful drive into the County whose team prop up the FL. Happy days.
Poor crowd indeed but 3 games in a week is going to do that, even one priced at £12. and i suppose if you are clutching at straws you throw in that it is a Bank Holiday weekend also.
I think the crowd will be the same as Saturday, though it should be higher because as you say all those moaning about prices should be there.
I suspect most if choosing one from three will choose Coventry.
Brighton just signed a forward for Getafe.

When you own the ground and his company sponsors are everywhere plus his own influx of money I dont think fair play comes in to it...
just look at the championship and the premier league...

And how is the censor at the Adver going to decide what is stupid and what isn't? Users are told not to post anything that is false, abusive or malicious, which is fair enough. Action should be taken when people don't heed that instruction. Outside that, everyone should be able to say what they want. Nobody has to take any notice of comments on here. Some may be over optimistic, some may be over pessimistic but who is to say what is stupid? Isn't it all in the eye of the beholder? If you were the censor ciclo, how would you go about the policing you suggest?

Why do I feel JB with his one man and dog campaign of 'multi posters' is going to add a number 11 here to the list. :o)
Both then, the number 10 and 11 in my opinion would be a waste of the Advers time, and also very difficult in trying to monitor.
