Cooper frustrated by 'sloppy' goals

MARK Cooper was left frustrated that his Town side conceded two sloppy goals at Gillingham in a match that he felt should have been over by half-time.

Swindon conceded in the ninth minute when Danny Kedwell pounced after Wes Foderingham’s clearance rebounded off Jordan Turnbull, and while Andy Williams levelled before half-time, another error allowed the hosts to take the lead once more through Kortney Hause before Raphael Branco’s 89th-minute leveller last night.

And while Cooper was pleased with the near-perfect display with the ball, he knows that his side have to improve defensively as a unit if they are to start getting wins under their belts, “Tonight I thought that we were nearly perfect with the ball, I’m not sure many teams an get much better than that in terms of possession and playing football,” Cooper told the Advertiser. “But we do have stuff to work on as a defensive unit.

“I think when you are on the training ground they tend to get it right with no pressure, but when come out there is crowd and they are getting tested. It is not just the defenders remember, the midfielders have to defend with and without the ball.

“It is something that we have to get right, but anyone who saw play tonight will say ‘tell you what, they ain’t a bad football team.’ “I think when you have that much possession maybe the boys behind the ball switch off in concentration.

“That is something we have to keep showing them and talking about, I’ll take the blame for that, it is up to me to work with them to get that right.”

Cooper is hoping that he will have some new faces in his squad before Saturday’s County Ground clash with Crewe Alexandra.

“Everyone knows we want another centre back and after another forward,” Cooper said. “We have got four or five that we are tracking.

“We’re just waiting for them to come to fruition, we are not going for people that don’t suit the way we play.

“We have got certain targets to pursue, we are just waiting for phone calls to say yes we can have them or no we can’t - I know Lee (Power) is working hard with that.”

Town will assess the extent of Massimo Luongo’s hamstring problem today after he came off late in the game at Priestfield.

Not too bad getting a draw at Gillingham Mr Cooper. I know the need to tighten the defence exists but in my opinion a strong centre half will make all the difference. So we just wait for Lee to sort that out, but in the meantime let's take the positives, we are mid table and playing good possession football. We will need another proven goal scorer as well to add to the squad then watch us go.Lee is aware of our weaknesses and I fully expect him to come up trumps, as usual. A good owner, manager and team. Am I down hearted? Definitely not we have the bones of a very good young team that can PLAY football.

I've looked at the Carlisle team-sheet for the last couple of games and Troy hasn't been listed, not even on the bench, so perhaps we did the right thing in letting him go.
I know it doesn't cure our problem but it did release some wages, which were possibly high, enabling us to seek a cheaper replacement , which it seems needs to sorted sooner rather later.

i got to laugh as most clubs have a takeover so the new people coming in can have a small or large injection of cash into the club.
Swindon Town Football Club just go from one skint person to another.
try Dragons den, but then you need a business plan first lol. No wonder fans of other clubs laugh at us and consider us a joke club. We must be the only club out of the 92 with NO experienced players.

Yes good result as MC they have so much time on the ball.Yet at times they let things slip, again is age and inexperience that will come.
Agree we need a seasoned C/B(they do not grow on treess) also a striker although is good to see both Smith and Andy Williams have found the net.
Result against Gilliam is allways a hard place to go so Well done. Good luck on saturday

I would guess in his opinion Jimmy thought Power is thinking of selling Luango and wouldn't want him to be cup tied to get the better price. For the FA cup maybe, but doubt that would even come into it for the Capital One cup. Besides which I don't believe any of our best players are likely to leave just yet.

Williams nets in his first start of the season and Smith has 4 to his name already. So please tell me why we need to sign a proven goalscorer?
.
With Stephens on the bench for saints at the weekend he will not be joining us unless they get someone else in first. There is still a chance he'll arrive before the end of the month though.
.
A draw at Gillingham could be seen as an improvement on last season, as could the ability to come from behind twice to snatch a point away from home.
.
Mark Cooper is doing a sterling job, keep it up sunshine.

I'll bet Cooper is frustrated. Virtually every aspect of the team is great apart from 2 factors

1) The inability of our central defenders to win enough headers. A glaringly obvious fault imo.

2) The lack of a big centre forward to get on the end of crosses. When you play games almost entirely in the oppositions half against a jam packed defence you need some musle in there to force the issue, especially when we are getting so many crosses in.

A Troy type and a Ranger type would be ideal.

Creatively we are not missing Pritchard, the wingers are doing their jobs fine.

Spot on Wilsey, we're not far short of a good team! but if Power's struggling to pay the bills, there can't be any dosh for signings/loans. So well done Coops for doing a good job on such a tight budget. If Power's struggling to run our club on his own? time he looked for new investment, there's plenty of Billionaires in Switzerland ol boy start looking Lee!!!!!!!!

Firstly top post Avo couldn't agree with you more. Grim, I'll keep dreaming (as is my username)! about Stephens as you yourself said Florin was injured on signing for Saints. Anyone got an update on his injury status. Does it not stand to reason that when he's fit, Stephens will be surplus to requirements and may still come? Just a thought as everyone else has written him off.

Of course we could have potentially won all three games like my tip for the division Fleetwood but we're playing good football and creating chances. Time always to worry when you're not creating chances. Regardless of my reservations about Power (and his previous businesses) he is clearly preferable to Jed the from court "liar", and he can clearly pick players on the cheap. Let him and Cooper get on with it, frankly they are doing a brilliant job.

Finally Dear Fans please encourage your mates to come down the County Ground and support the team. We may just have a better one than the doomsayers believe.

Average is the key word - would need to wait till the end of this season to see if it's comparable. 8100 average over a season doesn't meam 8100 every game consistently.

Gotta be a stiker out there warming a bench that can see the potential all those attempts on goal just needs a natural striker on end of them to really make a name for himself and could be plying his trade in Championship or Prem if he puts himself in the window , problem as we all know these so called footballers would rather take the big fat pay cheque and sit on a bench than play on Saturday .
Offer an electrical company a free advertising board in the ground and have them fix /maintain the system , tough times require tough decisions ,like a lot of fans do every week ,do I feed the kids for 25 pounds or go to football , not really tough decision is it ? (sorry kids) COYR

The defense is an issue which needs to be addressed, and another forward with a bit of pace for any knock downs would be nice

There's only doom and gloom from a few on here, most of whom don't actually go to games. When you add up the usual suspects it amounts to about 20 - which is hardly representative of the fan base!!

Those of us that do attend matches appreciate that some excellent football has been played this season already, particularly the home game against Scunny which was a fantastic performance.

Interesting to note that my son went with a friend to watch Reading v Ipswich last weekend and he said that he would rather watch our brand of passing football than the hoofball that was on show that day.

Keep it up MC and don't pay any attention to the few moaners on here, the majority understand and appreciate what you are trying to do. COYR

Should have got a season ticket then great value ..still with the level of support you give the club. Still its probably best for everyone that you didn't as we would only have to put up with your petty pathetic whinging about getting others to invest when you can't be bothered to turn up and support the club yourself.

Another of the spend "others" money brigade who expects that football will be provided of the highest quality still to be delivered without making any contribution themselves. Great fan of STFC you turned out to be - Not - IF EVER !

Direct quote from experienced Gillingham manager Peter Taylor last night to the press :

They couldn’t have worked any harder, said Taylor.

They had to work hard because Swindon had the majority of the ball, let’s be honest about that. I thought Swindon played some absolutely fantastic football.

We had them looked at on Saturday and they played exactly the same at Crawley and got beat.

It was a good performance by them. We had to be patient and at times we over-worked to get the ball off them and then when we won the ball back we had no targets and then we lost it again. That was frustrating.

Swindon had more chances than us and looked a very good football team.

Yes, it's interesting how others see us Cleuso and we seem to be getting a stream of plaudits.

I'm very heartened by what I've heard so far about how we've played and looking forward to experiencing it soon for myself. Ultimately though, people are right when they say results count, and as Cooper's frustration is testament, we will need to tighten up and take more chances.

The future is indeed bright.

Further to the comments by Taylor I have looked at match report from the Gillingham news. There are a whole load of comments about how we dominated the match and what a good footballing side we were. It seems there was more positivity from Gillingham fans than some Swindon "supporters" who seem to be on here way to often deriding the club and the team. In terms of our finances we are where we are and there are teams a lot worse of than Swindon. Based on all that surely it is reasonable to focus on the quality of what is on the pitch and give this very young team our backing. Its a very tough league and I am sure at some points we will get kicked off the park but at the end of the day even if we finish in mid-table that is not a failure considering all the factors.

We got a draw at Gillingham......and now the future is bright!!!!! hahahaha you deluded fans with your heads buried deep in sand do give me a chuckle lol. We can't afford to pay the police bill of £27k and the Don Rogers stand faces closure unless the sound system is fixed by Saturday....The future is bright, lol yeah....Downwards!!
"We can't afford to pay the police bill of £27k"

So you're saying we're skint? But won't pay for a match ticket, providing any income to the club. And Power should invest money in the club, bring in players, get promotion and then you might bother coming to a match if you can be ar$ed? Interesting logic.

If you don't support the club, i.e. don't ever go to matches, what does it matter to you whether we win, lose or draw? You're never going to be able to make a comment on how we've played having not seen the match, so beyond watching Final Score and saying "oh, we won," or "oh, we lost," I don't see why losing or winning would be a big deal to you. Another case of empty vessels making the most noise it seems.

You voted with your feet - good luck to you. Bye bye.

I think a few are getting carried away here.

Usually towards the end of a good night out we normally go for a decent meal. The price at our favourite place usually works outs out with drinks at over £20 a head but under £30, so somewhere on a par with admission to CG. Do I care as to how far behind they are with paying their bills, no. As long as the food and drink are fine it's not my concern how the owner pays his bills. Funnily enough there has been a few owners but the food is still very good and the staff remain about the same, cooks and waiters come and go, same as players and coaches over the duration of time. The place has had a few re vamps over the years and the name has changed twice, but its still the same in many ways and food has always been good and value for money. The strange thing is, I don't see loads of customers questioning the owners or the manager to how bills or staff are paid, as in most walks of life its their business and not mine to question. As to whether its there or not in weeks or months to come is irrelevant, as I can always choose at any time to eat else where. A useful parallel, one which many would do well to consider, its down to Power on how the club is run, if others think they can do it better then perhaps they should band together and offer him a price he'll find difficult to refuse, but I doubt very much if they will, but they will come here and spout how self righteous they are and how they could do so much better, and before you quip Jock, no this isn't aimed at you , but you can have it if you want it. I'll leave the running of the club to the owners, and I'll support the guys on the pitch, because it is them I'll pay to watch when I can.

Time to go wum.... if you are going to post at least get your facts correct.

It has never been reported that Don Rogers is to be closed for Saturday, only that the capacity may be reduced if the PA isn't fixed or alternative put in place.

Ah so that is where you are seeking assylum from.. other fans forums... suggest you try the one a bit further to the East you may get more of a welcome but I'm glad to say our future isn't yellow or flirting with non league.

Let's be honest. Cooper's record away from home is awful and it has to be about the management imposing a mindset on the team away from home that enables them to win games - doesn't matter how pretty they are - just get the three points - and lets forget blaming the age of the team - does the local under 8s team never win away?

Not sure why most posters on here complain, most only go to home games, which we have been superb most games since cooper arrived, shame this football can't attract more fans.
It's the people who travel away like myself (most games) who's debate should be valid.
A good point last night but still need a defender or two and a forward.
So the moral of the story is go to home games and stay away from the away games.
Onwards and upwards

Not sure why most posters on here complain, most only go to home games, which we have been superb most games since cooper arrived, shame this football can't attract more fans. It's the people who travel away like myself (most games) who's debate should be valid. A good point last night but still need a defender or two and a forward. So the moral of the story is go to home games and stay away from the away games. Onwards and upwards The futures cooper. Swindon till I die Coymr smirg kcab

Thumbs up from me Grim. As much as I don't always agree with you at least you can give a valid opinion on the matches by making the effort to attend - the wind up merchant from early whinges without ever bothering it seems.

I do honestly think the football is exciting and entertaining at home.
Coopers hands are tied, but winds people up including myself Is the same old. Young players, going to sign players,
As I said last season we will lose as many as we win, and that won't change, but I will applaude him on his away tactics even if its hard to take with the number of chances, possession we have had.
Reference to away matches I got it into my head, go for the piiss up rather than the football, because after the sheff game away last year nothing in this world is worth crying or shouting from the rafters about.
We get what we get away depending on what team turns up.

i got to laugh as most clubs have a takeover so the new people coming in can have a small or large injection of cash into the club.
Swindon Town Football Club just go from one skint person to another.

Then the door is open for you and doom mongers like you to get a loan from the bank as per The Glazers @ Man Utd and make a go of it!!

We must be the only club out of the 92 with NO experienced players.

Depends what you mean by Experienced?
If you mean mature...say over 28 and have a lot of league experience, then yes I'd agree with you...though Darren Ward is still on the books, n'est pas?

A young team is not necessarily a bad thing; Go back to the Bert Head era at Swindon and he got the Town into the old Div2....players like Mike Summerbee, Woodruffe, Ernie Hunt, and later Don Rogers et al...
...not a bad team at all.

And prior to their tragic accident, The Busby babes.....a young team challenging in Europe.

Solidity at the back is required, but, from the progress made from last year is anything to go by, then this team have the potential to challenge for automatic promotion.

I was doubtful of the team prior to the start of the 14/15 season, but having seen them twice, I think Cooper et al, and the team are doing very well, with some attractive football being played, and long may it continue.

I am sorry but whilst I do believe we have not had a bad start it seems to me like all we focus on is possession that type of football was the reason we went 13 games without a win, last night we looked good on the ball but were creating very little as like that period last year we played it all in front of them, knocking the ball around nicely without purpose.

That said we would have lost that last year, this year we got a very lucky point, I don't think Cooper is doing a bad job, I just dont like his arrogance.

I am concerned that we can't even pay the bills that are coming in, so where is all the money going then, we have drastically cut the wage bill and our overheads, even got rid of the scoreboard, wheich was even working in the Ricki Hunt era.

we are too easy to play against, sit back let us play our football and have 65% possession and then just hoof the ball over the top of us and you are in on goal.....

But we are where we are, we have no money and rich owner, I have watched us play a lot worse than this in previous times when we have been skint, we even had Jimmy Quinn having to play himself up front....

The trouble is we have been a bit spoilt and our expectations need to be managed, we are not going to compete in the transfer windows with Bristol and sheffield, but we have one of the best midfields in the league who if we keep them together will get better and better.

Its not all bad on the field, I just wish we could play with more purpose and less worry about just keeping the ball, possession counts for nothing when you are conceding from goal kicks and hoofs over the top of the defence....

No Manc that was Ward & Hall lol! Have had a read of some interesting points.
Avo IMO we still need a sharp finisher. Like many I hope Wilma will come good and last night's strike might inspire him but to me he's L2 at best. Smith has looked sharp and looks like he could improve but we need a Donaldson, Ranger, Assombolonga type player who's fast pacy and hard to shake off the ball.
Him&her despite the wind up element of the posts nevertheless hits the nail on the head when he remarks on the cost of games the lack of investment and no real prospect of reaching the championship which is where most of us would like us to be I reckon.
Love Grims "don't cut the tannoy wires" far too much seriousness on here at times.
At least Cooperman has now publicly stated we are wanting at the back and up front and he's right about our midfield pitching in to defend when required.
I see Twinkle scored for Brentford last night & understand Joan is back at Shrews who won 4-0 last night but was not among the scorers.
So Adver any update on whether the DR will be open on Saturday?

Personally I'm happy with a point away from home. But I'm still not happy in the manner we achieved it, 'sloppy goals' is exactly what happened last season, and it seems we haven't learnt anything.

Cooper still hasn't fixed our problems, and it's glaringly obvious we NEED a STRONG, EXPERIENCED CB! I have been saying this all summer, with the likelihood of Stephens staying at Southampton, we should have looked elsewhere as a back up, I noticed in the paper this morning that Jackett wants Rodger Johnson out at Wolves, could be a perfect signing, other players include, Kevin Doyle and Jamie O'Hara, thoughts?

It's worrying upfront as well, you can argue that Smith has scored 4 goals this year already, and fair play to the lad. But how can we go a game with 25 shots with no goal, not one! I think a striker needs to be lined up like Doyle or maybe even an introduction of Waldon up front? On a brighter note, it's fantastic to see Williams get off the mark, saw him against the Irons and I was really rooting for him to score, would have topped of that game if he scored.

Johnson, O'Hara, Doyle... How's that for a trio of signings? Could be perfect.

What amazes me is that cooper can say that we have to much possession and thats how the players switch off ??
TO MUCH POSSESION..THAT IS WHAT HOW HE TRAINS THE FRUCKING TEAM
I know we are only a div 3 club BUT trying to play the style of the top team just won't work as the players are not good enough and that is why they are div 3 players at best...HOPE I AM WRONG

Hope we don't mess it up like we did last season

We could all wish for this and that player depending on our personal choices. The real challenge is how to find the funds to pay for them.

Could be perfect.[/p][/quote]We could all wish for this and that player depending on our personal choices. The real challenge is how to find the funds to pay for them. Cleuso

Another big positive is that we now seem to be a 90 minute team and scoring late, where as last season we were not a fit side at all it seemed.

I'd rather watch what is being dished up last and this season than some of the hoofing dross that we had under Malpas and co, and the football this season is really decent for such a level. Perspective and patience are the key words for this young team. Only worry is injuries and suspensions will be our downfall with such a small squad.

try Dragons den, but then you need a business plan first lol. No wonder fans of other clubs laugh at us and consider us a joke club. We must be the only club out of the 92 with NO experienced players.
Him to Her? Not seen you on here before. Welcome to the debate.

Agree with much of that Jock and if we had a Troy type centre back and a Ranger type striker I reckon all Bookies would stop taking bets on us winning the league. That's how close I feel Power and Cooper have us to the Championship.

But we don't have those players and have to take our chances with a group of highly talented youngsters who clearly also have a lot of character. Predictions on the finishing position will clearly have to lowered but not necessarily by that much. Too early to tell.

And who cares if we owe £70k. I don't mean to sound trite and it is clearly important to those who are owed but it ain't gunna break the club. It hasn't even inspired Power to accept the first offer made for any players.

My advice is, if you can afford it, get down the CG, cheer on the team like real supporters (eg Portsmouth/Celtic) and enjoy the football.

Wiz to use your analogy - if your favourite eaterie goes belly up through mis-management it's no big deal, a minor blip, like buses there'll be another along in a moment.

Not so with our club, and it is our club, Power, like all who have preceded him is just the custodian for the time being and it is what he does during that period that matters.
Whatever the arguments the off field "antics" for want of a better word have to be worrying and the two most glaring problems are a real worry.
Getting back to your analogy if your restauranteur fouls up it affects wiz & family if LP does the same it affects a far bigger family about 8k of them and leaves them possibly terminally ill.
Remember when LP was first mooted to be involved? And those people who now metaphorically kiss his backside were the very ame people who slagged him off due to his previous track record. For me he remains just above the Banbury Bullsh!tter street cred wise and I'll be delighted to be proved wrong in the fullness of time if he ultimately proves to be the Messiah and not just a very naughty boy. Over & out.

Jock, only up to a small point do I agree. The club has Power's name on the deeds, the fact that many like us past and present have paid for admission to watch a game in the cold light of day is immaterial. I pay for my meal, eat enjoy and leave, and by the same token, I buy a ticket of admission, watch the game and leave, whether we win, draw or lose. The contract ends there. If the club goes belly up then there are alternatives, Marine, City, Rovers, Cheltenham, some may migrate over time and others not, their choice. The fact remains that we have no recourse. If the FL or Health & Safety decide to come down like a ton of bricks, they will, we have little money so the points deduction will be around -30, something which will go down like a bucket of lead with all of us. Shouting it from the roof tops though brings nobody any credit.
So far Power has put £2M and more into this money pit of a club, and I'd like to think that with the team we have he wouldn't want to let that amount go, especially after fighting so hard to get the club off Jed in the first place. If he was about to write off his losses he wouldn't have done that. I think he knows an awful lot about football, but little about running a club. He has his accountant mate in place, so I believe, and Shah, so what I'd really like to know is, exactly what is the problem. Just saying no money is not the answer I'm looking for. better to have had and enjoyed, than not had at all. I've been waiting for months to hear you say, Accrington Stanley, but you've disappointed me. darn it, shucks, battled and battered again. Still lets see what the next game brings with it, buckets ?

I thought Jed the red bought Lee Power in to be director of football then the big fall out happened and Lee ends up thrust into the chairman's role and owning the club. Lee was invited to the club and then see what Jed and his circus were up to playing the fools and ripping the club off and so decides to kick the rabble into touch. So I do not see why some have this negativity towards Lee Power as the way I see it we would be in a far worse position with the circus still here and Agombar would be our star attraction on the pitch, and Jed would be keeping Fods out of the team as our keeper.

Young players, going to sign players, As I said last season we will lose as many as we win, and that won't change, but I will applaude him on his away tactics even if its hard to take with the number of chances, possession we have had. Reference to away matches I got it into my head, go for the piiss up rather than the football, because after the sheff game away last year nothing in this world is worth crying or shouting from the rafters about. We get what we get away depending on what team turns up.

Bit of both for me - definitely go for the football but by the same token you don't see me driving to many away games ;-)
