JACK Stephens appearance on the bench for Southampton appears to have signalled to Swindon Town they should move on to other targets.

Stephens’ impressive loan spell and the arrival of teammate Jordan Turnbull had made it seem a formality that the former Plymouth youngster would be coming back to the County Ground.

Southampton’s seemingly endless fire sale of stars and crucially a lack of replacement for Dejan Lovren means Saints are probably unwilling to let Stephens go for fear of an injury crisis.

With the deal having been on the cards all summer Mark Cooper indicated he might be re-adjusting his sights.

Asked for an update on the situation Cooper said: “There’s a few managers getting a bit jittery. Now we obviously start looking at other targets don’t we?

“We have other targets and we are pursuing them because if he’s going to be on the bench for the first team are we realistically going to get him? I don’t know.”

Whilst this does not spell a categorical end to the Stephens deal it does suggest patience with the move is wearing thin.

Cooper also revealed that no decision had yet been made on whether the club would be extending Josh Lelan’s work experience loan deal beyond this Saturday’s home game with Crewe.

Shame, however guess was on the cards.Cannot blame Southampton but questions Coopers judgement (putting all his eggs is one basket)
Surely there must be a semi decent CB around and why is Ward not part of Coopers plans??? ok he did slow down a bit however allways thought he gave all

63, we should have been moving on end of last month, Koeman said weeks ago he liked Jack and wanted to keep him, if that didn't ring the alarm bells with Cooper and Power what does?

Obviously we don't know what's been going on behind closed doors, but if they don't have something sorted out for 2 to 3 new additions before the Crewe game, questions need to be asked why we are not able to bring in the promised targets, our situation has got worse because of injuries and Thompson's suspension it has now become more critical than it was before the first game of the season as we have less players available for selection.

How has Cooper put all his eggs in one basket? He is quoted above "We have other targets and we are pursuing them"

In fact the wait may yet bear fruit if Sherwood gets the Palace job, they have a lot of defenders on the books and have just signed Hangelaand so I wouldn't be surprised to see us nab a player or two from there if Sherwood gets the job.

Not sure about Lelan but it was his debut so deserves a chance to rectify, maybe month 2 wouldn't hurt isn't month 1 finishing soon?
