SWINDON TOWN: Luongo knows away form must improve in 2014/15

MASSIMO Luongo knows Swindon Town will have to wise up away from home if they are to avoid the sort of inconsistent form on the road that plagued their 2013/14 campaign.

The Robins won just two of their first nine games on their travels last term, although one victory was at Championship outfit QPR in the Capital One Cup, despite remaining unbeaten at the County Ground until mid-October.

Ahead of his side’s first away day of the new campaign - the League Cup trip to Luton Town this evening - Luongo suggested that a little deeper thinking is required from the Town players in the absence of home comforts.

He told the Advertiser: “Away games are something different - whether we play the same team or chop and change a little bit is up to the gaffer but I think we’ve all learned from last year that away games are difficult. We won’t get the luxury we get from playing at the County Ground.

“As players, and me personally, I’ve got to realise that and maybe make a few changes myself - maybe be a bit more disciplined.”

Luton will take part in their first League Cup tie in five seasons following half a decade in non-league, and the draw is not one that has particularly whetted Luongo’s appetite.

“I’ve never liked playing the League Two sides or sides in our own league in League Cup games because anything can happen,” he said.

“When we play bigger teams we’re not expected to win and I think we rise a bit to that challenge but the thing is with these games, anything can happen.

“Luton have come up from the Conference, they’ll be in form and buzzing. It’s probably one of the tough games to deal with, which makes things difficult.”
