THE Hampden Park roar will live long in David Bishop’s memory – and sustain him when he returns to America to start his winter training, writes Kevin Fahey.

As a proud member of the Scotland team the 27-year-old, from Chippenham, was afforded a special greeting when his name was read out on the start line for heat two of the men’s 1500m.

“I will remember that roar when I was on the start for ever,” said Bishop.

“And both the opening and closing ceremonies were fantastic.

“Glasgow put on a great show and it was great for me to have my family there as well.”

Sadly the crowd couldn’t roar him into the final as Bishop just fell short finishing eighth and outside qualification.

“I was really convinced I would make it into the final and I was in the right place going in the last 100 metres but by then I had already started to tighten up.

“I just ran out of juice and much of that is down to all the training I missed during the winter and then playing catch-up as I had to get the qualifying standard twice. I think that took its toll.”

That also means Bishop isn’t likely to spend the rest of the season chasing times, particularly at the 1500m but he will run a few 800m races in a bid to finally break 1min 50secs.

Then he will decide when to return to his winter base at Albuquerque, New Mexico.
