Cooper plays down the potential impact of Stephens

MARK Cooper has insisted Jack Stephens won’t automatically become the linchpin of his defence, even if he does finally complete his loan return to the Country Ground.

The Southampton youngster impressed during his first loan spell at the end of the last campaign, with a season-long switch possible this summer as Cooper rebuilds his backline.

Many see Stephens as potentially the key member of Cooper’s three-man defence, but the Town boss insisted the likes of Josh Lelan, Jordan Turnbull and Raffa Branco are just as important to the functionality of the team.

While Cooper did admit Stephens is almost certain to play if the move is completed this week, he doesn’t necessarily see the 20-year-old as a direct replacement for Ward in terms of the organisational qualities the veteran brought to Town’s young defence last season.

“If the prospective new signings arrive we’ll have the decision to make over whether or not to play them or try and bed them in carefully,” he said.

“But I think you know though, if Jack comes he’s going to play.

“Jack can play anywhere but the thing with Jack is he’s really calm on the ball and is a good footballer, so we have lots of work whichever three it is and we need to get a bit more shape to it this week.

“He’s not necessarily (filling the hole left by Ward), they have to do that as a unit and they have to be so well drilled it becomes second nature to them.”

Cooper admitted there has not been any interest in either Ward or Ryan Harley, with the duo given permission to talk to other clubs, but there is still no prospect of them being involved in the first team at this time.

“They’re still training and the attitude’s good, but no (they won’t be involved) at the moment,” he said.

So even with such a small squad they've decided that Harley & Ward will not be playing..... I assume they'd rather play a 16 year old.... Sorry but that it utter madness..... Both these players can do a job for us.... They have 100's of games experience between them, we I think we need....

With each passing day of no news of any of the essential loanee's Cooper has been telling us he needs even the most optimistic of fans must be disappointed with the lack of activity with just 5 days until the start of the season . Of course it could all change at the last minute, but not a good situation to be dependant on the whims of other clubs and their managers.

Rob, I think the problem why he can't play Ward is he (Cooper) is setting us up to play a high line of defence with centre backs that are going to have to deal with balls coming down the middle over the top, for that you need a good positioning, good pair of legs, pace and play as a unit. Something I'm afraid Wardy lost a long time ago ((f he ever had it). With Hartley last season he never quite fitted in with getting the ball forward to the strikers and again he's too long in the tooth to change at his stage of career.

I think Cooper could have handled the PR better with the media as to why they won't feature, wish them both well and hope they find a decent club.

Cooper could have handled the PR better with the media in this connection ? POSSIBLY but the media blokes are famous for distortion , economy with the truth , etc. My gut feeling is that Coops is a lot cannier than some posters think and I `m prepared to run with him for the time being at least.

Also money will play a big part
.
Footballers wages are not like a regular job where they simply get paid x every month
.
They have all sorts of appearance and other bonuses included in the wage
.
So by naming them it could cost us hundreds or thousands more a week - which can not then be used on players later in the season
.
I'm still amazed how so many moaned at Ward all last year - called for him to be dropped and now moan he is not playing!

I am simply amazed at some of the comments here given the financial set up of the club. OK none of us know for sure what is in the kitty and what isn't, but, Power has made it abundantly clear we do not have the clout we once did. I would be surprised if anyone else does come in before the loan window opens. I think that is where we are heading, and Power will want to keep as much cash within the club for as long as possible, because that is how its going to be from here on. Others can bleat all they like the fact is, we can only spend money once, if we have it to spend at all. The court case will have cost the club financially and in its respect status by other clubs.
I think we will all have to be patient and bide our time. Doom and gloom was forecast for last season and for the better part we did very well. Cooper and Power will remain tight lipped for as long as possible on all fronts , promising nothing, and then anyone who does come in is a bonus. We have to get used to living within our means. I'll settle for a club to support in League One as opposed to no club at all if we enter admin again.

I think many thought it was a given, all Cooper and Power have said is, that they would try to bring him back, nobody has ever said it was set in stone, and Jock you should well know by now considering all the pearls of wisdom you spell out to the rest of us, it aint a done deal until the ink is dry. I've not seen one statement where Power or Cooper has said that he is coming here for sure, and given the exodus at Southampton I doubt it very much, to why so many are hanging on to false hope is beyond rational thought.

My biggest concern is that playing Wes as a sweeper will bring him into contact with players often in a "ball over the top" situation and his ensuing foul will see him red carded, now that is a concern and likelihood of injuries received causing further periods out injured. I think that is a far bigger concern opposed to one player coming here or not. We are not equipped for this proposed style? of play, (Stephens or no Stephens)never in a million years UNLESS, Power has somebody lined up in the loan window. We'll have to wait and see, and if Power and Cooper have any sense they will remain tight lipped.

Not sure where you are coming from on this Wiz, it's Cooper that has clearly said on more than one occasion he needs at least another 3 players in, it's not the fans diaagreeing or having a moan about anything else other than the fact we have not been able to get the targets in earlier, probably more down to internal affairs elsewhere rather than lack of trying by Power, never the less. Cooper knows the budget he has to work with and I can't believe he would publicly state the obvious if the financials were not already agreed with Lee, so IMO financials is not the issue as to why we are not yet up to strength. Surely fans are entitled to ask when are these new players coming because this has been dragging on for quite a while and maybe Grim is right asking why we are not looking elsewhere rather than being drip fed with maybe's and possible scenarios which will leave us under strength if we don't get our targets in on time, starting in 5 days time.

By the way I thought the loan window was already open, it's when it closes that matters, but one would hope Lee has something sorted long before then.

OTR, who has said we are not looking elsewhere ? I think there is a lot more going on than we are told. Cooper and Power know what they are doing and are probably saying nothing to the press so deals don't get scuppered as they have done in seasons gone by. I think a few faces may well arrive but not until the first few games have been played and teams elsewhere are settled, then the loans will come in. I cannot see Power jeopardizing his investment.

Wiz we may still have a club, we should be grateful that the Jedi has gone, we should encourage Power's prudence up to a point but with four days to go until we kick a ball in anger we're still looking decidedly lightweight everywhere except in goal and midfield.
Stephens to me is a remote possibility yet many are convinced he's coming and will be our Messiah. Kasim's comments are worrying and Wes being a sweeper is even more so because there will be panic situations that will inevitably cost us a goal or two.
I know I always tend to come down on the side of caution but I really do think we face a bigger struggle this season than last with a flaky strikeforce and a dodgy back four to date without any recognised centre backs because I don't include Branco in that category -yet! Hopefully he will develop but we certainly need someone of Stephen's ilk to bolster the defence.

Jock, yes I agree with what you are saying in essence, but we don't know what is going on behind the scenes. Jedgate did us no favours, but it did bring in Power who may not be perfect but better than admin and deep relegation to some unheard of league in the bowels of the system.

I think we are more cash strapped than what many realize, hence Power's plee for folk to get back on board after the court hearing. I think that S/T sales aren't as good as they have been over the last few seasons either, and what has happened to the money that Jed took out of the club before leaving ? No, I don't think we have much room for manouvre, so loans it is and as for Kassim, he worries me.......full stop. A bit hot and cold, can be good/bad and ugly all in one game. I 'm not going to worry about one player. We'll probably have an awful start, and couple of loans will then come in and steady the ship. We've all been here before, and so probably have Power and Cooper, and they are not the idiots some think, but far better them than some others and who knows, if Lady Luck smiles we could get a sensible investor. Its all gone quiet on the Sherwood front as well, now there's a thing, care to speculate ? Anyroad, I'll have to leave it there, our Headington postcode address beckons.
I suppose with Turnball in today's team photo then it seems we have a reasonable starting 11 for Saturday.

I'm no fan of coopers 3-5-2 to me it seems almost like giving the opposition a goal start but quite happy to be proven wrong. For example I would have expected to see 5-3-2 for opposition goal kicks but in the Leeds game it was 3-5-2 but maybe I am missing something?

The best thing to do with articles like this, is to ignore every word apart from what is quoted. The rest is fanciful sh!t stirring trying to stir people with headlines to sell the paper. Seriously, Cooper's quotes are no more than 25-30% of each article and clearly are separated excerpts from another interview.

He just not undermining the other defenders we have got here that is all.
Southampton are in a mess and i guess Stephens has a chance of playing Premier league football.

I read that as "if they get the players they want, they'll let him go". It seems odd logic though. He's either good enough to challenge for a Premier League place or he isn't. I reckon he probably is good enough and doubt they'll let him go out on loan - unless perhaps on a shorter term like last time.

Best run in 25 years?! We had 10 league wins in a row in 2011/12!
