TOWN manager Mark Cooper admitted there has been no progress on potential deals for Jordan Turnbull, Brad Smith and Jack Stephens following Town’s 4-1 friendly victory over and Aston Villa XI this afternoon.

Southampton defender Turnbull was part of the Town side in their final pre-season friendly, but has yet to complete a potential loan move, while there is still work to be done if Town are to capture his Saints teammate Stephens and Liverpool full-back Smith.

Cooper is hopeful of adding to his squad ahead of next Saturday’s League One opener against Scunthorpe, but insisted there has been no movement yet.

“I’ve heard nothing more, that’s how it is,” he said.

“We’re not in serious need because we have some good players but we need some players because you can see the substitutes I’m putting on are 16 or 17.

“There’s nothing wrong with that and we love young players at this football club, we give them every opportunity, but are they ready to play league football week in week out? Probably not.”

However, Cooper is pleased to be able to involve the likes of Will Randall and Lee Marshall in his squad and believes being at the County Ground represents the youngsters’ best chance of playing in the Football League at a young age.

“They have a realistic pathway into the first team and they know that if they are playing well they are going to be involved in my training and involved with the squad.

“It’s the perfect opportunity for young players, being at Swindon Town.”

Another young player involved against Villa was defender Curtis Da Costa, with his only real moment of action coming with a poor tackle on Michael Drennan which Cooper was quick to blast the teenager for.

“It’s a ridiculous tackle and I’ve said to Curtis that if he does that in a league game it’s a red card and we’re down to 10 men,” Cooper said. “He’s not proved anything to me by doing that.

“He’s done it a couple of times now and we won’t tolerate that. I don’t know what it is but it won’t happen again.”

It must be frustrating for the Fans/LP/MC,however cannot understand why does this allways seem to happen to STFC.
Did read some really negative posts to-day ref LP/MC sorry at the end of the day that´s all we have, even whenAB/Fitton and the mega rich Board were at the helm STFC managed to mess up.

It aint doom and gloom but is a bit worrying that woth 7 days before the start of the season the club appear to be floundering.OK there skint just feel they should have been honest from day one.
I do hope they will survive next season and they get the players they are after

I don't want to be critical of Cooper. I feel sorry for him. After all, he's left minding the fort in SN-whatever while Power is in Switzerland, munching his Toblerone bar waiting for the **** cuckoo to jump out of its **** clock. But Cooper cannot influence anything, it's all out of his hands.

Nonetheless, someone ought to give him some PR training. "We’re not in serious need because we have some good players but we need some players because you can see the substitutes I’m putting on are 16 or 17". Can you contradict yourself in the same sentence?

Yes, I can't.

Either we need some players or we don't. I really do think that while Power has to spend most of his time in Switzerland tax dodging, we need a safe pair of hands like Nick Watkins as CEO. It's not fair on Cooper that he is the only one around to talk to the dumb media when really he cannot say anything of substance at all (other than contradict himself in the same sentence).

We are not in desperate need as we have good players (Wes, Thompson, Byrne, Luongo, Kasim, Thompson, Smith and Williams) and therefore a decent first XI to start the season with
.
However, we have a very small squad so with the odd injury here and there - ie Luongo and Barthram today - we are having to put scholars on the bench - so more bodies are needed as they are not ready to be there week inn week out
.
We would be in desperate need if we did NOT have a starting XI and have the scholars starting

As for those moaning at Power/Cooper for not signing players quickly enough you should see the comments of the Blackpool Chairman - you know the club who with 7 days to go only have 13 players and no keeper and needed 9 trialist to play a friendly today!
.
"Signing players is not as simple as people make out. They don't just turn up in the morning and they're signed by tea. We have had a failed medical and an agent from Timbuktu asking for £200,000 to be deposited in a Swiss bank account - seriously"

But it should be in our situation. We have 2 lads in my view waiting in the wings! - Smith and Turnbull. There's no point in comparing us with a team like Blackpool

Good post, but I think you'll find Lee appointed a General Manager for the every day running of the club to replace Murrell. I'll stand corrected but believe his name is Steve Anderson, so Cooper is not responsible for any thing else but getting the players ready for August 9th, so hardly the only one around.

Maybe pal you should read Cooper's words before contradicting me. The clue is where Mr Cooper says: "we have some good players, but we need some players….".

doh….

I think that most supporters believe that we seriously need some more players.
No contradiction whatsoever
Exactly - if you take a quote remove the important part of course it will be different!

LP seems to completely ignore the desperate part just to have a pop at Cooper

We are not in desperate need as we have good players (Wes, Thompson, Byrne, Luongo, Kasim, Thompson, Smith and Williams) and therefore a decent first XI to start the season with . However, we have a very small squad so with the odd injury here and there - ie Luongo and Barthram today - we are having to put scholars on the bench - so more bodies are needed as they are not ready to be there week inn week out . We would be in desperate need if we did NOT have a starting XI and have the scholars starting[/p][/quote]Maybe pal you should read Cooper's words before contradicting me. Good post, but I think you'll find Lee appointed a General Manager for the every day running of the club to replace Murrell. I'll stand corrected but believe his name is Steve Anderson, so Cooper is not responsible for any thing else but getting the players ready for August 9th, so hardly the only one around.
Yes Andwrson was hired - not sure on exact title or role - but is about
.
Plus Shah is still a director and Power quoted her working 15 hour days around the case
.
Also it is 2014 - so the days of having to be in one place to run a business have long gone!
.
Obviously something's are best face to face - but Power will be able to do a lot by phone, email, VC etc
.
Most negotiations are not done face to face - chairman can't travel all over the place to talk all the time!

Tax dodging? He lives in Switzerland, so pays Swiss taxes. Please explain to us all, how that is tax dodging. You really should be very careful before you throw these libellous, inaccurate comments around.

Yes you're quite right, I retract that. I have no idea of his tax affairs. But I am still uncomfortable about the whole Cre8 Publishing episode, and the shares ending up in a Switzerland nominee account after it went bust. Why did Mr Power move to Switzerland from the UK soon after all that mess? Why is he involved with Swindon Town? Things just do not feel right at all.

That's better LP and many of us have sympathy with that view but that's where we are at the moment and we are all hoping that it works out OK for STFC. Power seems a genuine enough guy and hopefully in the future he'll be able to prove that to us beyond any doubt. Switzerland is also a lovely place to live.

Spoke to a Southampton fan today on my job as a courier driver, and he informed me that Saints would allow us to have Turnbull on loan but Stephens won,t be going anywhere so don,t bank on him coming back to us on loan. As for New Faces, think your find that programme dissapeared from our tv screens in the late 60,s!.

Les, I think most of us could have had a good guess and come up with that conclusion about Turnbull and Stephens. Does your Saints fan have inside knowledge or is he just guessing too? By the way, didn't New Faces start in the 70s and finish in the 80s?

But how much wages are these players on and all free signings so does not mean anything in my book. May be their chairman has more money than ours who knows but meaningless if all the signings are nobody's.

Les, I'm amazed it was 1963. I thought it was much later than that. I remember Lenny Henry being on it. A few weeks afterwards he made it into the big time - I saw him topping the bill at Ferndale Club! I think he was about 19 and just did impressions in those days.
