Cooper: I'll try to lock Stephens in until Saints' coach leaves

Former Town loanee Jack Stephens

Town boss Mark Cooper

First published in Sport by

SWINDON Town manager Mark Cooper is not anticipating any new signings by the time Southampton turn up at the County Ground for a pre-season friendly on Monday evening.

Town are understood to be chasing four Premier League starlets on loan deals, including two centre-backs, a left-back and a forward, as they try to bolster their ranks before the new League One campaign, but midfielder Anton Rodgers, who penned a one-year contract with the club at the start of the week, remains the Robins’ only summer recruit thus far.

Cooper does not expect any further activity over the weekend though one of his targets, Saints defender Jack Stephens, will be in Wiltshire on Monday - and the Swindon boss has suggested a rather unique way of making sure he lands his man.

“I wouldn’t have thought there’ll be anything by the time we play them. Obviously I’ll try to lock him (Stephens) in the office on Monday night and keep him in there until the team coach leaves,” he said.

“I think (Town need to sign players) the sooner the better because once we get past Saturday there’s only three weeks until the season starts. We need to get them in so we can embed them into the way we do things.

“That’s the way it’s got to be because of the circumstances but we don’t moan, we just get on with it. We’re trying to teach the younger players. That’s what we’re concentrating on.”

Another player interesting Town - Liverpool full-back Brad Smith - was not included in the Reds’ 33-man party for their pre-season tour of the USA.

When asked by the Advertiser whether that could mean Smith’s arrival at the County Ground is imminent, Cooper said: “Let’s hope he’s coming down the M6 and M5 to Swindon.”

Meanwhile, Yaser Kasim underwent a scan yesterday to determine whether or not he requires an injection to help heal a nerve injury in his foot. Cooper stressed that the problem is not in the same foot as the broken bone which forced the Iraqi international to miss the end of last season.

“We don’t want to take any chances with it so we’re getting it scanned and if he needs a little jab in it to take away the nerve problem then we’ll do that,” said Cooper. “It’s just in between his metatarsals, a nerve from the hard ground. It’s the other foot from his other injury.”

Finally, of Tijane Reis’s long-standing knee problem, Cooper said: “I don’t think his knee is that good. He is back home getting treatment on it.”

Would have thought if JS was coming on loan to STFC he would have done so.
MC must realise Soton have new boss and he may wish to check JS out, although it seems he has never appeared to be a first team selectio.
So it is wait and see(not so long we hope) as for the Liverpool lad again is paper talk pure speculation, old saying nothing concrete until all is arranged with clubs and player

Koemann is checking Stephens out, that is why he was included in their pre-season trip to the States. The fact he has not been in the country explains the reason why his immediate future has not yet been defined. Even if RK has a high opinion of Jack, Saints and every other Premier league team are only allowed to register 25 players (other than City } If he stayed at saints, he would be a bench warmer at best, which is not what he needs to develop his career, so we have as good a chance as any to bring him in for a year long loan. If he is not signed by next Wednesday, then it could suggest he's going elsewhere.

Think we can pretty well write Tijane off, I just can't see the knee getting any better. Another Navaro, type injury I suspect. Good that Cooper acknowledged the positions he needs to strengthen, but thinks he needs to add a pacey winger to the list unless he intends to play Williams out wide.

To me this article comes across as very confident in getting Stephens and Smith and indeed judging by the comments the deals might already be nearly done.

The main problem would appear to be the changes at Southampton. Yes, they have a new manager and it would be only natural that he wants to take a look at all of his own squad.

Also there is transfer speculation surrounding both of Southampton's first choice centre backs, Lovren and Fonte. The back-ups are decent, but they might be reluctant to let Stephens go just yet if they are about to go from four to two first team centre backs.

It's only 25 over 21 year olds - clubs are allowed to include unlimited U21 in the squad which like the "home grown" rule (Fabregas is one for Chelsea!) makes a joke out of the rules
.
So if you have talent like Sterling or Shaw - you simply don't name them in the 25 man squad to include a few more average foreigners in there!
.
We won't be looking at wingers as we are playing wing backs this year - so no need for wingers
.
That may change and we target some later in the year but for now what he has said make perfect sense

We need an experinced lower division central defender for youngsters to play alongside, much to critical an area to be considering young loanees. Branco is OK but far from the finished article. Worrying with only 3 weeks to the new season and it could cost us dear. We need to find another Calderwood.

Whether Coops gets Stephens to come to STFC remains to be seen. The important message is surely that he is acknowledging the need and is busting a gut to fulfil it.

He certainly was but then he was also captaining Mansfield before we took him and had been playing regularly for 3 seasons - at 21 he was already a seasoned professional who knew the ropes. The 21 year olds that we are likely to get on loan will not have that kind of toughening experience to draw on.

Spot on Syd - and a perfect illustration of what's wrong with football. Promising young players get swept up by the big clubs (who may never give them a game) and they miss out on the grounding they'd get by working their way up. I don't remember anyone ever using the "young and learning" excuse for Calderwood.
