CRICKET: ‘Title win will ease agony’

WILTSHIRE captain Mike Coles wants his side to use the pain of missing out on a one-day trophy final as motivation for their assault on the Unicorns Championship title.

The county lost out on the chance to bid for the Unicorns Knockout Trophy as they were well-beaten at Oxfordshire in the semi-finals last Sunday but after seeing his team lose their stunning ten-match unbeaten record, Coles has turned his attention to a title charge.

Wiltshire are currently top of the Western Division with three games to go and will be looking to make a huge stride towards cementing their position in this weekend’s crunch clash with second-placed Devon at Devizes.

“Everyone was really disappointed about losing on Sunday but we’re 14 points clear at the top of our league in the Championship and if we could win that and say we got to a semi-final in the trophy, that would be a damn good season,” said skipper Coles.

“We’ve got a huge game this weekend against Devon and we play Cheshire, who are third at the moment, two weeks after that at South Wilts.

“If we win this weekend, we could really stretch our lead and there are only three games left so we wouldn’t be far off achieving qualification.

“When we had a debrief after the Oxfordshire game, we said that it was time to concentrate on the three-day competition and there’s no reason why we can’t go all the way.”
