SWINDON TOWN: Goalscorer Kalinga turned up at training and asked for a trial

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper granted Celvin Kalinga a trial after he turned up at the club's Liddington training ground Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper granted Celvin Kalinga a trial after he turned up at the club's Liddington training ground

CELVIN Kalinga pitched up at Swindon Town training at Liddington and asked for a trial. Less than two weeks later he scored the Robins' first goal of pre-season.

Kalinga netted the opener in a 2-0 win at Yate Town yesterday, but his route into the Swindon side was nothing but unconventional.

Town manager Cooper explained how Kalinga came to be involved in his side, having been initially listed as ‘A Trialist’ when he entered the field of play.

“We were training on the first Friday back and I stepped off the pitch for a little bit and I got a tap on the shoulder and there was a kid stood behind me,” he said.

“He asked if he could have a trial and said he had been playing in Belgium last season, so for the sheer gall of it we said he could train with us and he did alright.

“He’s told me he played for Royal Antwerp last year, which is pretty good, and I thought he did okay.”

This is almost like a story from the " Victor" or " Hotspur" comics.nds like a Roy of the Rovers or Alf Tupper character. Why did he pick Swindon to ask for a trial? Hope we sign him and he becomes the league top scorer and scores the goal that gives us automatic promotion!

Sorry, it should have read " sounds like a Roy of the Rovers character"
By the way, did he turn up on a bike with his boots hung round his neck?

Anyone know from which country he originates. Assume if he played for Antwerp he is either European or has the necessary International clearance with family connections.

Why Swindon, good question, I'm guessing he knows somebody that directed him our way, hope he proves a success story and looking forward to seeing him with a squad number on the shirt.

Why Swindon?
This seemed obvious to me. Our woes are well documented as is our financial situation. If this chap turned up at Bournemouth, with their Russian funded squad of 50, he gets told to do one. Turn up at Swindon when we've barely got a match day squad, and gave Waldon / Gladwin chances last year, and he's got a chance.
Hopefully he's a gem.

Im pretty Sure John Bostock plays his football for Royal Antwerp + they are a 2nd division side. He looked ok when he came on but as we all know he needs to be given a chance over all pre season and hopefully they take him to the training camp next week.

Would query that theory NR, if he turned up at Bournemouth and was good enough, they, like most, and if they wanted a player in that position in the team, would see that as a potential profit making situation and with Bornmuff also now, they have the wriggle room with the finances to take the knock if doesn't work out, where as we don't.

Job done for this week-end:
Two clean sheets, two goals for Luongo, Smith off the mark and another triallist chipping in with a goal.
Look forward to the match report, particularly how the triallists held up (Kargbo in particular) and if any of injured trio Tijane, Agombar and Barker where anywhere to be seen.

WONDERKID
I decided to take the microphone to the Webbs Wood Stadium in South Marston this afternoon to briefly record the thoughts of Town fans Iain Watkins and Anthony Gingell on the both of the opening Swindon Town pre-season friendly fixtures at Yate Town and Swindon Supermarine.

A main talking point was trialist Calvin Kalinga who has featured for Town in both games after turning up at the training ground with his boots. He’s an unknown quantity. Even Google can’t find any dirt on his past, especially his time at Royal Antwerp in Belgium.

The wash bag interview was an excellent insight for someone like me, unable to get to the games. Some interesting rumors in there too such as an 18 year old left back from Liverpool (Joe Maguire seems to be the only player fitting that bill) and another CB to accompany Jack Stephens from the Saints (sincerely hope this is Jordan Turnball - previously part of the England U19 set-up and played every minute of Saints U21 premier league fixtures last season).
Calvin Kalinga sounds like a real chancer though - absolutely invisible on any internet search and yet turning heads in both pre-season matches so far. I suspect he's a local lad with a lot of front - best of luck to him - he's certainly got a go get it attitude.

LR, that pretty much sums it up. Kargbo and Kalinga looked good, bearing in mind the level of opposition. Kargbo has an air of someone who is in control, and that should be just what the doctor ordered - assuming he can maintain that against stiffer opposition.

Williams also looked good with his runs from the half-way line, as well as some reasonable passes at the end of the runs, so maybe he is developing his game.
