DEVIZES and Wootton Bassett will both be double-handed in the final stages of the Wiltshire Ladies national pairs championships.

Two pairings from each club successfully negotiated their third round ties on Monday night to book a place in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Wiltshire county pairs championship at Bradford on Avon on July 12.

Patricia Reeves and Susan Long defeated their Spencer Melksham opponents Eileen Hawker and Marcia Cottle while Bev Lilley and Sheila Garlic completed the Devizes double with victory over former county championship winners Karen Funnell and Jean Collier (Box).

In the northern section of the draw Doreen Croucher and Charlie Harding won the all-Bassett third round tie against Barbara Twine and Pat Edmonds.

Bassett teenage sisters Lucy and Katy Smith, who recently made their Wiltshire inter-county championship debuts in the Johns Trophy, accounted for the Westlecot partnership of Carole Coombs and Linda Perfitt.

Also through to the last eight from this area of the county are Barbara Land and Viv Baskerville from Chippenham Town who notched a prize scalp when beating Purton’s Johns Trophy duo of Chris Mitchell and Alison Fail.

SAME again is the decision of the Wiltshire Ladies Johns Trophy selectors for the final west group match away against Devon on Saturday at Culm Vale.

They have opted for the same side that finished the inter-county championship game at Devizes against Gloucestershire and recorded a 142-90 victory.

In that match skip Carol Grenfell aggravated a knee injury on the sixth end and had to retire with Sue Ochyra moving up to skip in her place and fellow Devizes teammate Wendy Gaisford coming off the subs bench to take her place at three.

It is not a surprise that the selectors have decided on the same line-up as it showed numerous changes from the previous game, a heavy defeat against Cornwall, and did manage against Gloucestershire to arrest a dismal run of six successive Johns Trophy losses in the past two years.

However, despite their win over Gloucestershire by 52 shots Wiltshire still only stand in third place after two games on 20 points, two behind Cornwall and 20 points behind leaders Devon who have won both of their matches so far. Gloucestershire are bottom of the pile on only six points.

For Wiltshire to progress to the quarter-finals they will need to cause a big shock and upset the formbook as they have to face warm favourites Devon away in their final group match.

The other west group match sees Cornwall play Gloucestershire.
