No Mass appeal as Australia head home

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Town's Socceroo midfielder Massimo Luongo Town's Socceroo midfielder Massimo Luongo

TOWN’S Australian midfielder, Massimo Luongo and his teammates will not be progressing into the knockout stages of World Cup.

Both the Socceroos and the 2010 champions, Spain, lost their second group games to Holland and Chile respectively. Those results gave the victors six points each and ensure the final round of fixtures in Group B will be for nothing more than pride.

Luongo did not feature as Australia went down to Louis van Gaal’s Dutch side. The Socceroos did lead after Tim Cahill’s stunning volley and a Mille Jedinak penatly cancelled out, then overtook Arjen Robben’s opener.

Robin van Persie and Memphis Depay made sure Holland got the win and left Australia needing a Spanish victory over Chile to retain a slim chance of qualifying for the second round.

The impressive and hard-working Chileans ended Spain’s miserable title defence in Brazil, also ensuring that Australia and Luongo will go home early.

Eduardo Vargas’ first-half strike put Jorge Sampaoli’s side ahead. Then another mistake from the beleagured Spain ‘keeper Iker Casillas presented Charles Aranguiz a chance he did not waste to secure the win.

Be good if Mass could get some time on the pitch in the final game for them.
Must admit the Aussies looked pretty good, and what a cracker of a goal from Cahill.

Cahill's goal was special, don't understand why he didn't stay longer in the premiere, still has a lot to offer. The Aussies missed at least 2 sitters and van Persie would never have got his goal if the socceroo's dumb left back Jason ?? had moved out with the rest of their defence and left 3 of the dutch 3 yards off side..

After the Song madness and elimination of Camerroon it looks like Brazil v Chile and Holland v Croatia or Mexico
