Just hope we're away on N.Y day , can't drive to home game because I'd be about 4 times the limit and there are no buses. So an afternoon in front of the radio with a large brandy is ideal.

The last time we were at home on Boxing days was in 2006 against Wycombe Wanderers when goals by Lee Peacock and Lukas Jutkiewicz secured a 2-1 win.

On another note away games at the Pikeys, Oldham, Rochdale and Doncaster on a Tuesday night is also a bit unkind.

However, I do relish the trip for Oxford on a Tuesday night to Accrington and Morecambe!!!!!

Weren't we the last team Scunthorpe played prior to their relegation. Seem to remember Brian Laws was there manager at the time and then he got the sack in November of last year. they got one of their rare wins against a Swindon team that didn't have the nous how to beat poor teams, but with just seven weeks before we kick off I'm hoping that Cooper will have learned not to give teams too much respect and we don't gift the silly goals we did last season that cost us a play-off place.

Nice to have a home game to start the season, doubt they will bring many with them, so if we get an 8k crowd for the opener we'll be doing well.

It wasn't our last home Boxing Day game, but one of those Brentford encounters still gives me nightmares.

We were three goals down in 2000 and playing abysmally. I'd had a terrible year and had been looking forward to a relaxing time with the family... and found myself watching such dross I walked out with half an hour to go. I resented Town ruining my Christmas.

Never did it before, never done it since... and of course I listened on the radio as I drove home to hear us pull a couple of goals back.

People said I must have been sick to miss the comeback but I honestly wasn't. As a Town supporter for over thirty years even then, I desperately wanted us to win, but wasn't prepared for Town to toy with my emotions any more that day.

A real low in my Town supporting life.

Both Gillingham games on a Tuesday night. City away on a Monday (great, have to take a day and a half off for that then!) and last game of the season will miss as it's the anniversary (although that was poor planning on my part when I got married - last game of the season will ALWAYS be the anniversary!)

On a plus point Sheffield Utd at home is a Saturday, last time we had them on a Tuesday night it was like watching paint dry. And Orient away's a Saturday, nightmare of a place to get to mid week.

Like many others, rather hacked off that for the 8th year running, we are away on Boxing Day, so I emailed the Football League to ask the to explain how this is fair. This is the response I got back. It's a bit long winded!

Thank you for your email.

We have raised your query with our fixtures and competitions department who have advised the following.

Swindon Town are one of three teams in League 1 who do not have a natural pairing, others are Crewe Alexandra and Gillingham. Pairing are when clubs are linked together, usually due to proximity and thus avoid fixture clashes, assisting with club and local authority requests. You will note that all of these three teams are away on Boxing Day so it was difficult to force a Swindon change to be at home in any of the available slots in the pairing grid.  There are a number of potential knock-on effects of pairings. One such example may be knocking all South Yorkshire clubs to be at home and all permutations have to be considered. However the fixture officer was aware of the frequency of away games you note and will certainly look at this for next season.

By way of some background, The Football League works with the clubs themselves in attempting to shape fixture lists that meet the majority of clubs’ approval. This is due to the complex methodology involved in the compilation of the fixture lists. The fixtures are worked on for many months by The Football League’s competitions department and our fixture scheduling partners. During this time all considerations and requests from all clubs are considered by The Football League, to get to a position where most are satisfied with the final list.

Along with certain basic competition rules on home and away frequencies, often there are several circumstances which dictate when fixtures will fall and many are specific to individual clubs (such as when near neighbours are home/away or whether there is a local public event/activity taking place on a certain date). Once the fixture lists have been compiled, Clubs will consult the Football League’s competitions department to attempt to mould their fixture list in their favour but it is extremely difficult to meet all clubs’ requests.

There may be specific reasons why a club has indicated they might wish to play a certain fixture at home or away so it might be worth consulting with the Club regarding a specific date/change.

A couple of historical online resources may provide further insight into the process for you.

Thank you for contacting The Football League.

Kind Regards,
Thanks for getting this response Mrs Miggins.

I have to say it is a comprehensive and adult response from the FL, one which we might not like answer it gives, but I respect the way they have explained it as an individual reply.

Blimey, I think I may have just complemented the Football League!

Good luck with the pie shop.
