JORDAN Smith headed up the Wiltshire challenge on the opening day of the British Amateur Championship in Northern Ireland today.

The Derry Hill youngster, 21, shot a one over par 72 at Portstewart to lie tied 39th after the opening day's strokeplay.

He was a shot clear of county colleague Ben Stow, who carded a 73 at Portrush.

But it proved s day to forget for Marlborough's England U18 champion Ben Amor, who slumped to a 21 over par score of 71 at Portrush.

Amor had three triple bogeys and a quadruple bogey in his round.

The players play another 18 holes of strokeplay on Tuesday, before the top 64 progress to the matchplay rounds.
