CRICKETERS of all ages will benefit from a £500 grant given to Devizes Cricket Club by Bag4Sport Foundation, the partner charity to the Gazette & Herald.

Money raised at a 24 hour spin-a-thon earlier this year by a team from Strakers Estate Agents was handed over to first team captain Joe Wookey.

Wookey said: “We have just spent £2000 on putting up new practice nets at our ground and this grant will go towards paying for those.

“We have nine teams from U9s right up to the first team and we also have a very good ladies team.”

Guy Straker, who presented the cheque along with Bag4Sport Foundation founder Andy Trusler, said: “Staff from our offices all over Wiltshire took part in the spin-a-thon and we are very pleased to see the money going to a local club.”

Trusler added: “Making this sort of grant to a Wiltshire sports club is what we are all about.

“Now we are looking for nominations for our Sports Stars of Tomorrow competition. We have £1,800 to give away to six young sportsmen or women from the Gazette area.”

The Gazette & Herald has joined forces for a second time with Bag4Sport Foundation to run the awards and there is still have plenty of time to nominate a youngster aged 16 or under who you believe has potential to reach the top in their chosen sport.

They can be an individual athlete or part of a team.

Last year the winners included track athletes, a tennis player, a golfer, cyclist, and a soft ball player.

If you are a parent you can nominate your own child or if you are a coach who sees a special spark in a youngster you can put them forward. All entries must be received by July 31.

Last year grants of £500 were given to three winners and £100 to three runners-up and the charity will do the same again for 2014.

The winners are likely to be youngsters who have already stated to make their mark on their chosen sport but could do with a financial boost to help with coaching, kit or travelling costs to competitions.

We will need to know why they need help and their achievements to date.

Any youngster up to the age of 16 can be nominated but they must not already be receiving a Lottery grant.

We will pick one winner and one runner-up from each of the Gazette’s three edition areas – Devizes, Marlborough and North Wiltshire.
