URCHFONT’S Morlon Simon is aiming to carry on rising through the ranks after helping the Army win the Inter Services T20 at Lord’s last week.

Soldier Simon, who hails from Grenada, took two wickets during the Army’s opening four-wicket win over the Navy before helping his side retain their title by beating the RAF by six wickets, with the 23-year-old claiming another two wickets and a run-out.

Last month, Simon was also able to add the names of former England players Ashley Giles and Dougie Brown to his list of scalps after bowling the pair out as the Combined Services beat a Warwickshire Legends team in a T20 clash at Edgbaston.

The Urchfont all-rounder has played for the Wiltshire League outfit since 2011 and has ambitions to break into county cricket after trialling with Warwickshire seconds earlier this year.

“As a young soldier in the British Army, I am really happy to be a part of the Army cricket teams,” said Simon.

“Playing at Lord’s gave me the feel of what it’s like to be an international cricketer with people shouting your name and the atmosphere in the crowd makes you feel very special.

“This was my second year at Lord’s and we have been champions on both occasions. I can’t really ask for anything better than that.

“I’m loving my cricket this year and hope to have a successful summer for the club and the Army.”

Urchfont captain Patrick Bromley is backing his star man to break into the professional game.

He said: “Morlon joined Urchfont in 2011 because his brother Marvin was playing for us.

“He’s a tremendously gifted player, he bowls 80-plus (mph) and bats like an opening batsman – I will be amazed if he doesn’t sign a serious county contract this season.

“For now, he’s focused on helping us reach promotion to the WEPL (West of England Premier League).

“He’s a big part of our team and its a pleasure watching him be so successful in and outside of the club.”
