Record entry for Rough n' Tumble

A RECORD number of 600 entries competed in yesterday's Rough n' Tumble multi terrain race.

The whole village of Milton Lilbourne turned out to support the event by making cakes and marshalling.

The event raised in excess of £1,000 for Milton Lilbourne Village Hall which will be spent on their long awaited kitchen refurbishment.

Race organisers Steve and Julie Goulding were delighted with how the race went and were encouraged by all the positive feedback from the runners who had obviously enjoyed the run despite the mud and huge hills.

This year's winner was Vito Graffagnino of Clevedon AC, who set off strongly from the off with the intention of regaining his winner's title from 2006.

He led from gun to tape, finishing just outside his own course record of 1 hour 7 minutes 35 seconds. His time was hampered by far trickier conditions underfoot after heavy rains of the previous week.

Following behind in second place was Paul Rose of Yeovil Town RC who just out-sprinted John Atyeo of Witney Roadrunners by nine seconds. The pair were neck and neck up until the last 400 metres.

Sarah Paradine of Alchester was the ladies winner in a time of 1:22.56, followed home by Linda Cummins of Yeovil, 24 seconds in front of third placed lady, Diane Hier of Warminster.

It was a very good day for Chippenham Harriers who fielded a team of 32 runners for their first club championship race of 2007. This meant they clinched both the male and female team prize.

First Chippenham Harrier home was Richard Schofield who had a superb run, finishing fourth overall in 1:11.49.

Other notable performances was Richard Phillips from Cheltenham who was first over 70-years-old to finish in a time of 1:48.21, a great way to celebrate his 72nd birthday.
